Blue smoke, need advice.

When I start up my car, I see a puff of blue smoke. And when I rev it up real high I get tons of smoke. This problem occurred over a period of just a few days. And I was wondering if it could be the type of oil I was using.

I've only had the car for a few weeks. Oil has been dripping from the engine but I think it may be because someone did a poor job installing the remote oil cooler. As a result of been pooring in more 10W-30 to replace it. Is there any chance that the type of oil may be making the smoke? And if not, what seals do I need to buy to fix my engine? Any other ideas on what it might be? Thanks alot.

Jesse

Are you adding too much oil? Check to make sure the oil metering pump isn't stuck wide open.

Putting ATF tranny sealer in with the oil can help rejuvenate the oil seals which can leak oil by them over time and cause smoke.

Maybe the side seal (oil) in the engine are toast.

My bet is on the Oil Metering Pump. Mine is stuck open, and will live that way (burning lots of oil) until later after I put it away, and have time to work on it (just moved into a new house).

Two things to watch for: your plugs are more likely to carbon, and if you stop getting the blue smoke, shut down immediately; your OMP has probably come un-stuck from the open position, and is now stuck in the "closed" position (or partially closed). If so, that ticking you hear is the timer on your engine!

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN

How do you know when the oil metering pump is correctly working? Injecting just enough oil? I'm a little paraniod that mine hasn't been working right after I rebuilt the carb. The only things I did was unplug the lines from the carb and the actuator linkage. What is it on the carbie that moves the linkage to the oil pump?

I heard something about putting a little piece of paper in front of the jet in your carb. It should turn the paper brown where the oil comes out.... something like that...

It's easy to test to see if it's working. Pop the air cleaner cap off and look down the barrels. Give the car some gas and you'll notice that oil will drop out of two tubes that run into the carb. You could also mix the gas with outboard motor oil before-hand and while the engine is running, pull the injector lines and measure the amount of oil flow. The Chilton's manual explains how to do it.

look way down at the bottom of the front cover on your engine(right side), you will see two small plastic lines going up to your carb and a oil pump actuator rod.

My 85 would smoke like that occasionally , started somewhere around 175k on the odo. Baby the car, change oil, use 20w-50 and you will get a lot of miles out of it still. Mine finally died at 224k, front apex

Also premix with Tc-W3 certified 2 stroke oil, whether the OMp is working or not... But smoking when starting look at it this way, at least you know its lubricating the seals
