KY Is it blown!

Hey guys i was just out warming my car up and when i started to back out of the garage it started running really rough. so i revved it a bit and it backfired loudly and it almot sounds like its running on 1 rotor. The oil pressure was good, battery was good. I dont a have a hookup for my phone but if your phone can get videos pm me your number and ill send it to you. Im worried that its blown i just bought the car a couple month ago. I guess i really have to go and get a compression tester now. I guess if it is Blown i can finally start my turbo build I wanted to not have the car out of commision though.

Thanks
Austin Leiphart

hmm. mine did that a few times when it was cold one morning. i think my trailing ignition and plugs are junk though. i held the gas down a tad and it cleared up after a few seconds. did a comp. test and it came out fine

Check for spark first, then the fuel level in the float bowls. A blown engine would be the last suspect, but even a ghetto compression test could tell you for sure.

revved it all the way to 7500 and it didnt clear up at all. I just sounded like an m80 going off in my exhaust pipe when i let off. And when checking for spark as long as it sparks when the plug is grounded it should run ok right?

Ok i checked the plugs and they were terrible looking so i went to pep boys and got some new ones. It still runs like crap but i noticed a hissing sound after i turned it off. It seem to be coming from the master cylinder/ brake booster area. would that possibly cause this.

+ 1 I'd start here first. Do a compression test!

pull your plugs, have someone else crank your motor over and listen for even-ish hissing and popping from both rotors. If you only hear it from one, or obviously uneven ones, bad news bears.

Yes. If you've got a nasty vacuum leak, it can cause it to run like absolute crap until it's fixed.

Cap off your booster feed line to test this.

Also check your ignition coils to be sure you actually have spark in both chambers. Sounds more vacum related.

Guys i think its a very bad vacuum leak. My emissions block off plate is leaking and where the carb mounts to the intake. I redid all the vacuum block offs and the car doesnt backfire like crazy now. I just think its weird how it was idling and it all of the sudden started this.

It happens. One time when I went to a meet in the FB, everything was working great when I shut it down. Then when I fired it back up to leave a few hours later, it was running horribly and wouldn't idle. Turned out a vacuum cap had broken. Patched it up with duct tape and drove it home.

Mine still wont idle i trhink the carb needs to be rebuilt by the way its acting. I ordered are build kit from autozone and im going to make a gasket for the emissions block off plate.

If you're not using locknuts on the block-off plate, they can easily vibrate loose enough to leak; especially without a gasket.

Well guys i thought id update and say i found the problem. It was the 1/2" vacuum port right next to the exhaust. i guess the cap burnt off. I still think its hilarious that I found this after I rebuilt the carb and regasketed all the blockoff plates. But now the carb doesnt leak and i guess its all good to go for my turbo project now
