Black interior
I have a '85 GSL-SE with the poop brown interior. I decided early on to change to black. I found a carpet kit from Victoria British and decided to paint what ever I couldn't replace with vinyl paint. Since my heater core puked (%@#%*&) and I had to pull the dash I decided to start now. From what I've seen in the catalog the 84 and 85 have different interiors than previous years and neither come in black. Is this true and what can I substitute from previous years? Did any FB or SA have black interiors?
BTW: Heater core replacements SUCK!!

i have an 84 gs and i have black/gray interior. if you go to an 83 or lower the radio trim is different and i believe so is the dash, so they do make it. and i did see someone selling leather black door pannels on ebay a bit ago so u could always try there.

i should clarify - since you plan on dyeing it black anyway, maybe we could trade interiors. mine is red leather and in pretty good shape. i'd prefer a brown interior, well, as a matter of preference. i noticed your location is western wa, so maybe we could meet up or something...
oh yeah and as far as painting/dyeing the interior, check out a search for "sem color coat" it seems to get pretty good results and is reasonably inexpensive.

i have an 83 gsl and it is black. the interior was a tan/brown color. i reapolstered my interior. my doors on the top are black and and the middle tan and then the botom black and all my carpeting is black. the top part of the dash is tan/brown and the glove box and the steering colum and the center councel is black. and the tan/brown leather seats make it perfect. it was amazing to see what i could do with that ugly interior. now it looks sweet. maybe ill post pics soon

Did the paint since a friend was willing and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Turned out looking great. Downfall is it can be scratched and I don't think frequently used items will hold up like door pulls and e brake lever. I'll be hunting for those black '84s.
btw- no kidding on the get the stuff clean thing. In fact everything had to be REALLY clean. Some parts were a real bear and had to be done several times.

I have an '84, it's got a black dash in pristine condition, also.
btw, I was at PnP last weekend, they had the grey & black seats just like mine, in almost perfect condition. I couldn't find a tear on them anywhere! Too bad I didn't need them..
Here's my interior, except the dash & shift boot surrounds are now black:

The dash and interior in those pictures is grey. The seats are grey also. As DF said, the series 3 (84-85) only came in grey, brown and burgundy. It is possible people are thinking the dark grey color is "black", but officially it is considered grey. Earlier models had black dashes and if you put them side by side you would see there is a lot of difference between the grey and black colors. If someone has a genuine black s3-style dash, it is either dyed, painted, or recovered.
