Black air cleaner for an FB?

Here's a new one to me.

I just snagged this air cleaner on ebay, it looks just like the conventional stock blue air cleaner on the FB except it's black.

Can anyone tell me where this thing came from?

Thanks!

Well that would be a very convincing paint job, with all the correct decals.

And the patina looks authentic as well, if it was painted it was many years ago.

Also there are some scrapes in the black paint and I don't see any blue paint peeking through.

I'll be able to tell better when it get here, but my guess is that its OEM.

Also, it seems to me I've seen one of these black units before.

Maybe some other Mazda that used the Nikki-carbed 12A?

There was a 84-85 (S3) 6 port 12A in an old magazine I have somewhere, and it wasn't in an rx, but shared a lot of the GSLSE goodies, like the 6 ports, exhaust timing, and even a super strange exhaust mani that resembled a header.

It had a black 84-85 Nikki air cleaner on it, and was pretty cool. The article title was "The next big thing" printed around the time the engine was new. I believe it was a GLC

It could be from a 6 port 12A but all of the 6 port 12A air cleaner lids I've seen have said 6 port on them. I'll find the pictures and post them..

The GLC's all had boingers as far as I can tell.

Maybe this 6-port was an option in Japan?

The 6 port 12A was a J-spec only option.

Here's a 6P 12A scanned from a 1982 Japanese brochure:

GLCs also had a pancake air filter, but the snorkel end is not straight.

the 6pi was optional in the Rx7 and Cosmo. not sure when they started, we only have parts catalogs starting 9/83.

they both have the same part number for the air cleaner lids (n225-23-673), so info there...

the 6pi engine was the first to have the 6 port induction system, its just like the GSL-SE system, except it was done first so it has a Nikki carb instead of the EFI, and its a 12A.

the JDM models are similar to ours, except they had a choice of either the 12A-6pi or the 12A Turbo. the 12A turbo used the GSL-SE suspension, although it had adjustable shocks. the 12A-6pi had the normal 12A running gear,

Weird. The one I saw didn't say 6 port induction on it...

Also, the car it was in is debatable. All I know is that it wasn't an rx7.

But, black air cleaners on 6 port 12a's was a thing, lol

The HB Cosmo had a 6 port 12A. Also side motor mounts on the int plate, like any GSL-SE and RE-SI int plate (look for the studs).

The Mystery just gets deeper, since this particular Mazda Rotary Engine air cleaner appears to be "none of the above".

I did a google search and came up with nothing that looked like it, although I did find a link to DD's (DivinDriver) photos of his engine bay after a bath and it appears that he has a black air cleaner on his Nikki.

I wonder if he painted it? Maybe James is right!

I found a few pictures of the oddball cast header it had on Google image search, turns out that it was you that posted some shots of it here on the forums years ago.

I still 100% believe that cleaner is from a 6 port 12a. Even if it doesn't say 6 port on it.

Figures DD would chrome it. Has he no respect for the rest of us?

J9 I will post the part number and lots of pics when it comes in, that should get us where we need to go. Thanks.

I'm kind of excited, it's like getting a RB exhaust system in the mail, only less expensive.

OK, the Darth Vader Nikki Air Cleaner has arrived and it is in every respect identical to a conventional blue FB air cleaner, right down to the N249 on the label.

So why is it black?

Here's the pics, as it arrived and after some cleaning:

Because all the other colors in the visible light spectrum are absorbed by the paint.

Looks dynamite all cleaned up Ray.
