If his car isn't an -SE he doesn't have an oil cooler, it's an '85... and IIRC, the -SE's oil cooler is in front of the rad, but I could be wrong.
Get a tape measure. Go out to your radiator. Measure it's shortest dimension (top to bottom, fin part only). That is the diameter of the biggest single fan you can put on your radiator.
You don't want it overlapping the sides of the rad because then it wouldn't be as efficient, pulling part of its air from around the rad instead of through it. Also similar to the reason why you want a shroud on your fan, you want all of it's air to come directly through the rad.

If you have a SE with a/c & P/s pulley extension, you will find a hardtime to find a e-fan that will fit at the right rating. Most of the ones you will see with over 1,800 cfm have large fan motor ( say 3.5" +). That wont fit between the radiator and the pulley extension. If you make it as a pusher, here's your other problem. There is a front end support between the OC and the a/c's condensor. so you will have to invest on 2 10" fans instead of 1 large 14 or 16" fan.
I have a GSL-SE. And, the guy at the shop said "as big as I can go" e-fan wise. I'll go with this Flex-A-Lite complete kit I found, since it comes with a complete shroud around it.
And, viper, you are correct, the oil cooler is in front of the radiator and actually sets a bit lower. Or, it is supposed to be aligned with the radiator but one of my oil cooler mounts is busted.
