big mufflers on a gen 1
Trending Topics
Behind a rotary its not the size of the muffler that matters, its the quality.
Regardless of the size or brand,if its any fiberglass packed straight through muffler or any cheap baffled type muffler.......,it wont last long with the rotaries extreme heat and strong exhaust pulses/noise going through it.
Typically for an exhaust system, anything over 2.5" is considered overkill on an N/A rotary, and will just increase noise while decreasing ground clearance.Turbo engines can go as big as you want with the exhaust, but 3" will usually be fine for most street vehicles.
Stainless packing material should be considered mandetory to prevent blowout or meltdown. The body/can can be mild steel, but it should be thick and beefy to reduce resonance.
The RB/Primaflow muffler is a perfect example of a properly designed, robust rotary muffler, although many claim its too restrictive. The StreetPort version of that muffler has larger pipes and has flowed enogh air for my 13BT to pump 14psi of boost and make about 300HP. Its lasted for about 5 years now with no signs of failure.....they are pricey, but WELL worth it.
