Better, Stronger
Well as many know I blew my fresh motor recently. Cause has now been determined conclusively to be detonation. Primary factor, front hub was a jdm hub and the timing marks lined up grossly different resulting in way too much advance. Now it will be stronger, with S4 rotors, solid corner seals, 3 mm apex seals (I know 2 mm seal better, but these 3 mm will not break), new s6 housings, fresh lapping...I wanted this update to be as bullet proof as possible. More updates to come including pre-installation pics and pics of the methanol injector location in the lower intake (maybe a video as well). Installation to be done within the coming week.

Detonation kills! This is what happened to my 4 month old engine with s5 rotors and brand new S6 housings from detonation. primary cause, catastrophic detonation. Why you might ask? Engine was assembled with a jspec hub which had the front pulley off by about 90 degrees, which had timing way out to lunch. Funny thing was you couldn't hear the detonation? I spent time with the new builder investigating the failure (previous builder said to investigate "everything" to determine the failure so history doesn't repeat itself). Upon assembly we ensured the engine was at top dead center and then lined the pulley up and saw it was way off. Next, we grabbed a north american S4 front hub, installed the pulley and the marks were right on compared to a stock s4 pulley. Hmmmmmmmm, would some blame the builder, ahhhh yeah, but I did take responsibility for my own tuning. New engine is built to be bullet proof and it will be tested with spray after full break in as well. I also relocated the water methanol to the lower intake for better safety as well.

BTW, those were factory "mazda" 2mm seals which tend to break on the tips from detonation and the housing never survives the fight. This time I am running custom 3mm seals which will not break.

Mock-up before installation of new engine...right now rain is preventing installation. Plus I want to swap out the steering box before the installation as well.

And I dealt with the hood clearance issue (it will be sticking out a little higher this time though.
What flywheel is going with this engine? The stocker in the picture? I hope not. The extra rotating mass of the SC makes it feel like your flywheel is heavier than it is. I'd say go aluminum if you have one kicking around. Or at the very least light steel.

. I love how when ever we turbo / supercharge our cars the unit we're installing looks bigger than the engine. lol
