best muffler.

I know your probably gonna say rb but im looking for other options. I have a stock 13b with a header and possibly dual presilencers. What would be the best sounding muffler that can hold up other that stock and rb. thx

"Best sounding" is obviously subjective, but I like the universal RB mufflers for their build quality and good sound reduction. Magnaflow and Borla are also good choices, but I'd recommend getting one of the ones with a straight core (i.e. not the offset/centered or offset/offset) because both of them use crush-bent pipe.

I was gonna say Racing Beat, since it IS the BESTone, but, back in the day whenI was racing IMSA R/S, Borla supplied the IMSA mandated racing mufflers specificly for rotary engined vehicles...so, I would have to say...BORLA.

Perhaps they got cheap after a while. All the ones I've seen have crush-bent pipe. Same with Magnaflow.

I have an RB system and while it does sound fantastic, inside the car at least, it's VERY heavy. So it's a compromise to use it. On the other hand I've heard a few others, Borla to name one, and they don't sound nearly as good. Always tinny and raspy, and always loud even at idle.

^^I've heard some really tinny sounding Borlas. Magnaflows always seem to sound nice and deep as long as you use thick-wall steel for the exhaust piping. Doesn't Rotaflow make some sick rotary-specific mufflers? Anyone from AUS or NZ want to pipe in?

There aren't that many mufflers that can hold up against the rotary exhaust, yeah.

I talked with Rotarygod about the dynomax superturbo mufflers. He has used them and he said they sound good, no tinny sound, are very quiet, and hold up fairly well, despite the fiberglass in them. They arent too pricey, so I'm gonna try one out here soon. They aren't straight-through mufflers, but he said that they flowed very well for him despite that fact.

Also a couple na 2nd gen guys have used the apexi world sport II muffler with really good success. Its heavy duty, well built, very quiet and its a straight through muffler. Quiet and sounds fantastic. The guys posted several sound and video clips. But it also costs about as much as the racingbeat muffler last time I checked.

I think that aaroncake also said he uses a vibrant presilencer with great success.

I was looking at getting a rotaflo muffler at first... Then I realized with shipping it was going to be about $1000 dollars Canadian.

I ended up getting a vibrant muffler and it seems like it's built pretty solid, but it's not on my car yet so I don't know how it will hold up (Turbocharged engine tho).

My opinion on Borla vs. Magnaflow: I love how my Borla sounds inside the car, very deep and nice, but apparently outside it's a little buzzy under high load. Magnaflows have a somewhat harsher sound, but aren't buzzy at all. Magnaflows seem to be a little louder in general than Borlas. I'm going to try a Magnaflow with an RB presilencer for my turbo project.

Dynomax is very well thought-of in the piston world. If they hold up to rotaries, that would be an interesting choice.

EVERY PP or BP ive heard of on the street run a pair of those along with 2 LOOOOOOOOOOONG glasspack (not louvered core though!) glasspacks.

in the rear they last just fine, i think if you tried to use it as a presilencer in a single pipe system you would be picking up broken pieces... lot of heat and vibration in the exhaust

Interesting. Always figured one of those would sound bad and too loud... The again I've never heard one. What do you love about it? Do you mean the sound? The power output? Would you mind posting a video or a soundclip?

i might make a vid.

but its sounds great, good power too.
its quiet at idle, and once you get over 4000rpm it just comes alive and sounds great, its really great.
i just got it put on a week ago, i went the exhaust shop wanting a new aftermarket muffler and the i ended up leaving with a flowmaster, and truly love it.

I use dynomax bullet race mufflers as presilencers. As long as they are at least 4' from the exhaust port the work really well and Magnaflow mufflers. The key is to use really good piping (or a turbo) to get rid of the pingy rotary sound. I've never seen a magnaflow blow up, but there are at least 2 threads within the last 3 years on this site alone of blown up Borlas. Looking at the products side by side it's clear that Magnaflow makes IMHO a better product. Heavier gauge metal really gets rid of the tin sound. RB new universal mufflers look to be of awesome build quality especially for the price. Just a little bit more than Magnaflow now. Rotaflo make amazing stuff.

borla

I can't imagine a dynomax superturbo lasting more than 6 montha on a rotary. I had one on a built Jetta I had that was blown out after a year.
dynomax superturbo the little u bends in there to redirect exhaust flow tend to break off in less than 6 months and rattle around on pissed-on cars. Plus I'd imagine the fiberglass lasting 30 minutes before it was all blown out. It made my Jetta really tinny until I swapped it out for a magnaflow.

I ran a Dynomax Ultraflow on my very first FB. With a RB header and a catco cat it lasted about a year before it was obvious that all teh fiberglass was gone. you could knock on it and it was clearly hollow. and 10 times louder than when it was new.

Magnaflow FTW. mandrel bends It's been on my car for almost a year now and it hasn't gotten not even a little bit louder.

^ Me too, because every single time I've heard a Flowmaster on a rotary it's sounded like a tin can rattling around. Truly awful.

I won't dispute that Magnaflows are built better than Borlas. Quite a lot better, really. That said, I have heard of Magnaflows blowing up and blowing out on rotaries as well, especially in the cat location. With either one, just don't use it as a presilencer and you should be fine.

I dunno what the deal is with the crush-bent piping. I've looked at two Borlas and at least three Magnaflows that were offset/centered, and all five of them had crush-bent pipe. I guess my advice, then, is to look at it in person before you buy.
