I soak the entire engine bay in GUNK engine cleaner (which from the smell of it is basically kerosene or diesel in a can) - wait 20 minutes - and then rinse.
WD40 isn't as flammable as most people think - but it is quite flammable nonetheless.
A puddle of gasoline won't generally catch fire easily either - but noone here will argue that it's not flammable!
