Belt squeals

In our 85 RX7 12a, there is a horrible squeal over 3000 rpm. I think it is the belt from the alternator. Is this common and is there any way to fix it?

First of all I should say this is not normal... First check the tension of your belts, this is the most likely problem...

If the belt is tight, then I would try disconnecting the drive belt and seeing if the problem continues (im talking for a VERY VERY short period of time...) It is possible the noise can be coming from a bad water pump...

are you sure it isn't one of the accessories? It is also possible it is not even belt squeal, it could be a bearing in the engine....

If it is a new belt, they will sometimes stretch and you will have to retension them.

Did you remove your air pump, if you did and still have the belt driven fan you will need to get a doulble pully for the altenator and run two belts.

no when the belt is off it will not squeal then if i put on the just the water pump belt it does not squeal but as soon as i put on the alernator belt it will squeal at 3000 rpms or more so it sounds like the alernator to me just dont know how to fix it

probably a bearing in your alternator, spray some lube into the front and back of it, if it stops squealing then you need to replace or rebuild the alt. Good luck

no prob, and if your alt. is bad you might what to upgrade to a 2nd or 3rd gen alt., they are stronger than the 1st gens and are fairly easy to install.
