belt installs

hey guys I did some searching on here. I found the manuals and still couldnt find in those what i was looking for. I need a detailed description on how to change out the belts on the 12A motor. I didnt know if there is a tensioner or if i actually had to remove some parts to take them off.

I assume you're talking about the fan belt and A/C belt. If you look at how the alternator and A/C are mounted to the engine, I think you'll find your answer on how to tighten and loosen the belts. It's the same as pretty much any car of that age, the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket is what holds it in place and you can loosen that bolt and swing the alternator up or down to tighten or loosen the belt.

Don't overtighten the waterpump belt or you could run a WP bushing in a couple months.

do you have power steering? that's a little bit different than the alternator belt and the air pump, and a/c. if so, first loosen the lock nut on the p/s pump pulley. then above the pump bracket you'll see a 10mm bolt head. loosen that. as you loosen that the pulley will lower, taking the tension off of the belt. once you have lowered it enough, remove the belt, replace it and tighten the bolt until you have adequate tension and snug the lock nut.

on the air pump, there are two bolts, a top bolt that has a 12mm head and requires loosening to pivot the air pump. the air pump secures to a bracket on the bottom by another 12mm bolt. this will allow you to adjust your tension. be sure not to fullt remove the top or bolt or you may lose the horse shoe looking spacer. just loosen each bolt and replace the belt.

the alternator is the easy one, however you must remove the fan in order to replace this little guy. loosen the tension bolt on the bracket and loosen the through bolt on the pivot. lower the alternator and replace the belt. retighten each bolt when you have the proper belt tension.

the a/c has three bolts. loosen the pivot/tension bolt on the top on the bracket. there are two 14mm bolts on the lower portion. one on the back of the pivot point and one on the front. loosen those and pivot the compressor down to the right and remove the belt. replace the belt and tighten the tension bolt first and then the two securing the compressor on the bottom.
