Beck end falling apart?

there was alot of rumbling in the car and i got the u joints replaced as well as the tires. but, theres still a good bit of rumbling, the mechanic said that the whole back end needs to be replaced....what the hell. that gives me no information. what parts need to be replaced!?!?!

Ordinarily it's just the axle bearings that fail.

No big deal, other than needing a big fraggin' press to get them off and put the new ones on. They press on to the axle.

Depends where the rumbling is coming from. rear wheel bearings? differential?

***This post isn't to revive this thread, but to help people out when searching***

I bought this guys car and the "rumbling" sound came from the Watts linkage-stud being sheered off. I arc-welded a 'new' stud on, but broke it again a little more than a month later. It sounded more like a shaking sound when it broke, but it definitely affected the handling of the car.
