Beater FB on the road, new issue...

I just got the beater '84 GS inspected. The front end is making a sqeaky/whirring kind of noise especially at slow speeds and with the wheel turned. I put new rotors/pads on a few days ago, but hadn't really driven the car much before that. Noise is still there with the clutch in. Any ideas?

loose/worn out wheel bearing? if its more like a growl that could be it. did you re-do the bearings when you replaced the rotor?

to replace the wheel bearing you will have to remove the whole hub assembly. advance auto parts can order the wheel bearings for you and have them in the next day or two

Didn't redo the bearings, I might be kicking myself now. It does have that kind of whirring bearing noise to it. I'M SO SICK OF LOOKING AT THOSE BRAKES (long side story involving a broken spring clip and a destroyed brand new rotor/pad). It sounds a little bit sqeaky too, like something is rubbing... guess I'll have to investgate.

naw he said the noise was present with either clutch position.

i know when i put in my powerslot rotors, those bearings where a bitch to get in/out. mine looked okay so i re-used them. i would first check the tightness by jacking the wheel off the ground and twisting the wheel front to back with your hands at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. make sense?

good luck

also, inspect your pad hardware. make sure its all in place, not broken or rubbing the rotor.

Make sure the slide pins on the calipers are lubed and moving back and forth freely.

No slide pins. My caliper just bolts on. It didn't look like the one in the Hayne's manual. It has 4 little clips that hold in the pads, and a caliper holder that bolts to the backing plate top and bottom. The caliper then swings down off a stud and bolts to the bottom of the caliper holder.

those bolts should be the pins. mine had maybe a little more than 1/2" thread next to the bold head, and the rest was smooth.

Yeah, that 'stud' along with the other one are supposed to be lubed up so that the caliper slides freely inboard and outboard.

It only happens after the car warms up. Doesn't do it for the first few miles. Will an ungreased slide pin make a squeaky whirring noise?
