Battery relocating in a 1st gen

Has anyone relocated there battery ?? Today i got the "huge"
wire,25 feet red,20 feet black for free and if i could use it to
move the battery to one of the storage bins,or that area.I don't
think there is any place else to put it,in a battery box with maybe
a cut off switch,,,or bus,,in my mustang i put the bat in the trunk
with a NHRA legal external cut off switch at the rear of the car.
that and driveshaft safty hoop,scatterschield,rollbar,,etc,,rules...
Now is there a unforeseen problem relocating the bat in the 1st gen. ???tell me what you think ,, thanks

Cool writeup. But shouldn't you have some sort of 50amp fuse or something? Kerry said he used two fuseable links (or maybe that was in regards to his cooling fan?).

I have a length of 2/0 wire that I'm going to use for my battery relocation, but I also have some 10 guage wire that I'm not sure will be thick enough to run to my alt.

Is 10 guage wire thick enough to replace Mazda's white with red stripe alt wire? They both look similar in thickness. Anybody?

Lets see,,even though the battery(my)battery has 500 cold
cranking amps the system is still 12 volt,,or 13.8 ?? if you look
under the dash at the fuse box the largiest fuse is 20 amps, right
so 50 amp fuse is,,lets say funny,,i hope you mean 5 amps..
the main reason to make a (service) fusable,is if there is a short,
or surge, that (service's) fuse will blow to protect that (service)
the idea::say stereo amp,is 12 volt,now say you use a 1 amp fuse
inline,,,it does'nt take much to blow a small 1 amp fuse,thats the
idea,,for the fuse to blow at the smallest variation in current to
save electriconics etc from being burn't up. the larger the fuse,
the more risk.a large fuse does'nt mean more power.you knew that,,,the wire i will use is # 4 AWG (strand) core, the same size
battery wire just longer,on these cars be carefull with wires putting a larger wire someplace may not be a good idea all the
time,,,unless you have upgraded the WHOLE IGNITION SYSTEM
be carefull because electrical systems can be a pain in the ***..

Mark Perez, I hope you have a good knowledge of electricity. I'd hate to hear about you setting your car ablaze. No offense, just concern.

I suggest you use 2 gauge cable or larger to support the ammount of current that will be drawn from the battery while starting. A larger size may be more desirable because the distance from the storage area to the starter is longer than the distance from the stock location to the starter. From there, use something like 10 or thicker from the starter to the fusible link block or form the battery to the fusible link block. That should cover you, as the alterantor runs into the opposite end of the fusible links.

Remember the longer the distance you go, the thicker wire you want, although a few feet really doesn't make too much distance, it never hurts to upsize by a gauge or two.

Again. No offense.

A fuse would be hard to use from the battery to the started due to the large amount of current when cranking. Most of the danger is when the cable is broken and makes contact with a ground. my cable is run mostly in the car, and protected when outside. So I feel safe in the setup.
Cable will have a voltage drop over a given distance. to combat this, we use a larger wire. Always use a highstrand automotive wire, vs. a solid core wire. use no less than a 2Ga wire to the back.
Jeff20B I used 8Ga from the Alt. to the Starter and have had no problems, I was curious if it would hold, as HEAT effects a cables abilty to flow power, but the 8Ga has worked out well.
Also try to use a good quality gold connector to help fight corrosion on external connections.

Hey guys,,no offense taken,,,thanks for the concern it matters.
so do you feel that 4 AGW (is) to small ?? it's pretty good size.
and of coarse it would be ran through the inside of the car
(tunnel) inside a flexable conduit. i need to buy a battery box
first to fit the battery and prephare the area to be mounted.
I'll probley use stainless steel,or aluminum with vents made to the
outside of car(no fumes). I have brass connection lugs and i will
solder them,,not crimp,or bolt on,,I am soldering god,I own every
kind, size of soldering iron even the kind of iron you place in a fire
(old) I'm glad i posted this thread,,pele,,no offense,,,cool mark

Just a thought here. But wouldn't it be worth it to get a dry cell battery instead of fabricating/venting a sealed battery box w/a regular battery?

Maybe crunch some numbers first.

I bought an Optima DryCell with dual posts, with hopes of doing the relocation. I have done some figuring , and I think I will lay the battery on it's side, posts toward the front and up. No vents needed. I'm still deciding on what wire to use and such.

dazed and confused

This might sound like a dumb question, but aside from clearing some space under the hood, are there any advantages to relocating your battery? Does it take that much space up front??

Angry Pic on the Wall?

Hey Perez,

What's that thing hangin' on your wall....No, not the dartboard, that other thing....I'm sure you don't wanna have Max7 and me come out and visit yuh some night just because of an innapropriate Kraut barge insignia hangin' on your wall....You don't really want to make us mad...You wouldn't like it when we're mad!!!

I've got a map of the United States you can put up there instead. Only problem is that it's actual size....One mile equals one mile...I live at D-12....

Just in a joshin' mood, today....
Probably too much MMO

Re: Pic on the Wall?

uh oh, I hope you don't look around me Denny, I've got a few of dem "Cars" in model form around the room here.
I like the stack thats below the picture

treceb - moving the bat to the center of the car helps weight balance, having such a heavy object so far forward and high in the air wreaks havok with a car when cornering, and when taking of such as in drags.
