battery keeps draining

my car usually sits in the garage and i warm it up every once in a while and the other day the battery was dead so i returned it and got a new one bam the car started perfect everytime and i let it sit for like 3 weeks and its dead again so i jump start it and it starts right up take it around the block a couple times and turn it off and on like 5 times and its dead at about the 5th try what could it be the old battery wires?

I had an aftermarket stereo that did that... the trickle current that kept the stations stored was a couple hundred mills. Over the course of a week or two it would run the battery flat. Ended up putting in a switch to cut it off for storage, then eventually replaced the stereo.

Best bet when storing for more than a week or two is to disco the battery, or at least pull the main fusible. Stops the clock and all the other trickle drains.

First of all, a couple times around the block most likely won't fully charge a dead battery. Mine sits for long periods without being run. I literally destroyed two good batteries before I finally got smart and permanently mounted a trickle charger next to the battery, and keep it plugged in. It keeps the battery right up to snuff.

You can buy a 1.5 amp battery charger/maintainer at Sears or Walmart for less than $30. It is easy to connect and disconnect.

but the weird thing is i never had a trickle charger or maintainer and i let the car sit for like 2 months and it started right up before.....it started doing this recently.....I do have the memory for the radio connected directly to the power wire under the dash but wouldn't that take forever to kill the battery??? And there would be days that i drive the car more than just around the block and it still does this the next day.....it is a new battery

Get a multimeter that reads amps, Harbor Freight has a cheap one. Disconnect the positive battery cable, place the meter to complete the circuit, read the amp draw, then start pulling fuses to track down the circuit that's drawing power. You'll need the wiring diagram for your year to trace the rest down. If you have any aftermarket electronics installed, disconnect those first.

ok i check it out as soon as i can but i think it might be the alternator going out because i used to daily drive the car for like 8 months and i never added any different electronics or anything and it never did that so i think it might be the alternator not charging the battery enough.....ill keep checking to see if i see anything strange before i drive it down to the mechanic.

well today i went and got the alternator tested and it is brand new!!! so i put it back on and double checked all the wiring and one of the fusible links looked pretty beat up so i fixed it the alt belt looked pretty stretched out so I switched that too and drove the car to work and back and the battery seems pretty solid i think i just had to drive it real good......I also noticed that all the warning lights on the dash come on now when i put the key on on.....lets see what happens when i let the car sit for 2 or 3 days ill keep you updated!!!
