badd gsl-se lsd problem

so i thought it'd be time to change my diff oil so i try to take out the fill plug...it was so hard to turn it that i stripped the bolt...i then have an extension welded to the bolt so i can try again...but it turns out that the fill plug is either cross threaded or the PO used locktite to permanently lock up the fill plug (I DONT KNOW WHY)...so i broke the bolt loose and it will turn...but it will stop turning at a point so i cant take the fill plug out...WTF CAN I DO....i really dont want to replace this lsd just becuz i cant take the fill plug out...its a 1985 gsl-se

once you get the plug out just try to find a tap big enough to rethread the hole and get a new plug

Depending how permanent it is, it may be possible to drill a hole through it big enough to break the threads off from the inside of the hole. I can't think of any "gentle-er" options.

First question - is it leaking?

If you can get it to seal correctly without risk of it coming out, then do so.

From that point - get to work on removing the 'FILL' plug about 3/4 of the way up the diff housing and see if you can get that one out. If so, you can get a vacuum pump at your auto parts store (used for changing oil on ATV's and equipment), and suck the gear oil out through the fill hole. Re-filling of gear oil follows standard procedure. Don't forget the LSD-specific additive that you MUST put in with the gear oil - I think it's a GM part number in a little bottle.

Yeah, I know it's inconvenient, and not the way it was designed, but don't ruin a diff housing if you can avoid it. You only change gear oil in your LSD diff about every 10+ years, maybe more. HTH,

Man, that is a real bummer! I would still try to get it out by heating up the area around the plug, and then using a ratchet with a cheater bar and slowly start to turn----back and forth. I think the fill plug and drain plug are the same, so take out the drain plug and make sure that you have a tap for re-tapping the fill plug hole if you get it out.

Uh yeah, Don't take out the drain plug until your sure you can get the fill plug out. This is a basic cardinal rule, Lest you want to have an additional problem of not being able to put new diff fluid in.
