bad news

I took my rx-7 to a shop and the guy said a rotor was out but just started the engine can you tell one is out by the sound of the engine he said he could get a new engine for 1500 dollars does this seem right. Also is there 2 or 3 rotors en the rx-7. I thought there were 2 but he said three so I don't know. He also said it was very commen for rotors to go out like that so I don't know. I bought I guess with one rotor out. I wish I could get a second opion but I live in Iowa and there scarice here. So is this guy right or just feeding me a line.

RX7se84,
Get a compression test done with a compression tester MADE for rotaries. You have two rotors, there will be three compression numbers for each rotor (one per apex seal). Since your car starts and runs, your overall compression must be decent. If you have a bad rotor/seal, Car will run/idle poorly, and at least one of the numbers in the compression test will be significantly lower than the other five.

If the numbers are within spec, several factors could make one rotor not run as well as the other, such as no spark, bad plug etc.

If it idles odds are the motor isn't blown. If it sounds like a 3.5 HP push lawnmower thats 10 years old on low throttle, it might have chucked a seal.

The engine price sounds reasonable.

the guy said the copression was 10 but was supposed to be 110. S o could the car even move at 10 pounds for compression. I asked him I f I should rebuild it he said they don't work good even if you rebuild them. He said the metal seals were broke and that they srcatch the casing so it's not even worth rebuilding. If I knew how I would is it really that hard? ALL I wanted was a rx-7 that ran but mine must be hopless I don't know wear to start any help with be helpful

I ran my '83 on 1 rotor for months. Low power, but it was a $900 beater after all.
