Bad Fan Clutch

So I just had my AC compressor replaced and my AC Guy warned me that my Fan Clutch is shot. It appears they are no longer available for SE's. What do most people do? Try to locate a good used one? Switch to an Electric Fan?

how did he test it? it should freewheel until the coolant hits about 90C and then lock.

the ac does work better when you add a condenser fan though

It's Locked up. OK for cooling, bad when starting a cold car.

I found a Beck Arnley (1300118) that's supposed to be for an SE at $44.

I just had the same problem on my '85. I found one on ebay off an '86 N/A. It was a direct fit, other than bolt size, which was an easy fix. All I had to do was bolt it up. I think it cost me like 55 bucks?

About 5-6 years ago, I replaced the OEM fan clutch on my 85 SE with a Beck-Arnley clutch from Rock Auto. It was replaced to help the AC work better not because of engine temp isssues. It worked great for the AC and the engine until last year when the engine began overheating in stop and go traffic. The B-A clutch appears to have a leak. The OEM fan clutch is back on now and the engine temp is fine.

A mechanic/tech at an independent Mazda shop said that the FC fan clutch will work on the FB but it requires a slight modification. He said something about the diameter of the pilot hole being smaller in the FC fan clutch. Is this true?

Sure wish there was a way to repair these fan clutches.

Steve
