Question Backfire after shutting car down

Seems that after I drive my car, it always wants to backfire. Sometimes as loud as a gunshot, and other times a quiet little poof... Whats causing that. Unburnt gas is my guess, but why? Its kinda embarassing when ppl start ducking or getting nervous when you shut down your car.

The first RX 7 I ever rode in, my friend's, had a horribly loud backfire shot. Never rode in it at night, but I'm sure there was a healthy fireball

I remember him getting a Holley carb, and that fixed it right up. I hope mine does that

Ive had the same problem as well, hasnt happened in a while but when it was colder it would happen a bit. rotaryrocket, what kind of idle problems are u having, I dont know if its normal but when my car is cold it has a prety rough idle and sometimes will die when i come to a stop and take my foot off the gas unless the choke is pulled out a bit. Is this as bad as your problems or am I just on the way there? lol

sounds like you at the same level haha mine idles pretty rough most of the time but it doesnt die much, just backfires hard... and also it starts to bog out at around 5000 rpm especially in 3rd and 4th so u have NO clue to what it is other then maybe the carb or my exhaust??...i did flood it quite a few times in the winter/spring though...i am wonderin if that may have affected my spark plugs?

I got damn lucky, no block heater and i only flooded it 3 times last winter. I drove it almost everyday except for that suuuper cold strech when it flooded at my gfs place and sat for about a week and a half until it warmed up enough to pull the plugs so i could dry the plugs and unflood it mostly. I did notice however that one time in the winter the secondaries on the carb had pools of gas on top of the butterflies. Does anyone know what this means if anything, I sorta figured it might have been from pumping the gas trying to start the car, and since there wasnt enough vacuum to open the secondaries, gas from the venturis or AP would just pool on the butterfly valve, does this make sense or not?

Also, i am thinking about converting to mechanical secondaries but if the gas on the buterflies is normal (maybe even if its not) would mechanical secondaries make it much easier to flood the car, since i will be driving it again this winter, id like to keep flooding to a minimum...because theres nothing i hate more than working on a car in -30 weather.

Mine idles fine once its warmed up. Doesnt idle until the car is warmed up, unless you have the choke pulled out abit. Ever since I took out the rats nest, the choke won't stay out and go in on its own like it used to. So now I just use coins, and put them in between the choke **** and the dash, so they stand on end. Usually the warmer it gets the smaller the coin that is needed. Luckily in Canada, we've got one dollar, and two dollar coins, big buggers for real cold days. On hot days really hot, I don't need to use any coinage. Again, this is only when its colder out.

mine backfired alot after shut off till I installed a header and 2nd gen direct fire. It has only happened once again since I did that many months ago. I hated my friends all covering their ears whenever I was about to shut her off. hehe. Nice flame though. My car is a flame machine anyway, didn't need more.

Also, the biggest backfire in a long long time came after putting in the K&N filter, yesterday. Prior to that there was minimal backfiring at shut down.

I should add that backfiring upon shut-off is pretty common for '79-'80 models equipped with thermal reactors.

I can't remember what year my friend's was, but it was an older GS.
It had to be older, because it had an analogue clock in the instrument panel. That was so crazy cool.

His was so loud that if he was late to class (back in the high school days) I could hear it inside the building. It was blinkin' awesome.

It's a little clock with the hands and everything. I always thought that was so cool. One of the things that made my buy my X. Imagine my dissapointment when I found out that I had NO clock
