Backfire

I have a small backfire or a pop when I shut off my car. Does this mean it is too rich or too lean at idle?

Thanks

Nope!

Means its a rotary!

Try coasting down hill in gear using the engine as a brake, then push in the clutch! If your exhaust system is good it will survive, if not it will be even a bigger pop!

Get a tune-up. I had major backfiring with my 80 RX-7 and I had a mechanic tune it and it took care of the embarrassing gun shots.

I recall one night driving home from school years back, I had to dump the clutch & gas out of a hard acceleration (saw a cop I wasn't expecting, heh) in second.

The resulting fireball lit up the rear view like a flashbulb, and the eyes of the guy behind me looked like a lemur caught in front of a freight train. Sounded like a damn cannonshot.

I was friggin amazed my exhaust system survived. Scared the crap out of me.

LOL! You guys are trying to stop the flame ... I am trying to get a longer one!

My last race at Road Atlanta I was informed that as I came down the back straight and let off the gas to downshift the car let out about a 4 foot flame ... I will see if my friend still has his in-car

Anyway -Change the plugs. Sounds like you have 1 that is not lighting up right...

That is the best story I have ever heard.

It means one of two things. Either your ignition system is tired and needs to be refreshed, or you're shutting your car off without letting it idle for 3 or 4 seconds when it's sitting still. If I shut off my car and don't let it idle for a few seconds after it stops moving, it backfires LOUD, but if I let it idle down and get settled into a solid idle before killing it, it doesn't backfire.

I know my ignition system is in good shape because I replaced everything, including the coils, at the beginning of the summer.
