Automatic Transmission adjustment

My automatic transmission in a 1982 RX7 GSL with the 12a is shifting way too early and won’t drop a gear when you give it full throttle. Full throttle from a stop it is shifting at 3,000 rpm. It was shifting at 5,000 rpm when I first got it running but I don’t know what has changed. It works fine if you shift it manually though. How do you adjust it or what could be wrong?

Usually autotragics have a vacuum solenoid to kick it down. I have a manual so i can't give you specifics on the 7s auto. Did you look in the FSM for clues? Foxed.ca has em online.

Yeah I did look in the fsm. I actually figured it out. Not sure what but something was consistently keeping my throttle from going fully open. I sprayed some silicone lubricant on it and i am now getting full throttle again. Sometimes it also sticks open a little bit. Any idea what to check for?

This could be a dangerous problem waiting to happen. There is either a bind or obstruction in the linkage at the carburetor, possibly the accelerator pedal pivot or the cable between the two. The return spring should be strong enough to overcome any normal resistance. Try unhooking the cable at the carb to see if there is a bind in the carb linkage or some where in the cable / pedal.

Whooo, like Banzai said this is a bad situation. Check everything in the throttle opening before you take it out again. Not having enough throttle is much better than "Holy *****, I can't slow down". Make sure everything moves smoothly and returns to idle/throttle closed position. These are old cars now. Make sure its safe to go fast,, before you go fast.
