Yeah, I think 5% sounds about right. My first FB was an automatic. I don't know that I would really call them rare cause they are pretty easy to find most of the time. I think a lot of people avoid purchasing them because of the automatic tranny. They are good for cruising in, but I think most people like a 5 speed in a sporty car. Plus the 5 speeds are lighter and easier to work on...

My 85 is an Auto, and seeing as I am 6'4" 280 lbs I'm kinda glad it is, I don't think I could use the clutch if it was 5 speed. If you can afford to, I suggest throwing in some different rear end gears to help make up the acceleration loss

rear end gearing isnt going to help out a whole lot. auto boxes are pretty uncommon. they were manufactured by JATCO(japanese automatic transmission corp) and the pre 84 RX-7's were a three speed and 84 and up were four speed automatic transmissions. the independant testing on the 7's with the automatic transmissions stated that the 0-60 times were only hampered by little more than a second. i couldnt tell you how accurate those numbers are. i have never owned an automatic 7 and never will.

That's one thing that the automatic transmissions are good for. I think 90% of the auto tranny Rx7s I have seen have great running engines. The auto trannies seem to have a way of protecting the engine from overzealous driving. Also, you can sell the counterweight off the back of the auto engine to someone that is wanting to switch to a lightweight flywheel. Those rear counterweights from the automatic engines can be worth anywhere north of $50. Make sure you hang onto it if it comes with the engine...

I've seen lots of auto first-gens. Maybe there's just a concentration of them around here.
