autocross wheels/tires

alright.. another autocross question:

For those of you running the SE bolt pattern and axle ratio, what size wheel and tire are good options for running autocrosses (race tires) should I try to get 205 front and 225 rear on stock rims (14") or go down to 13" for gearing advantages or what?

I've seen a few running like 225 or 235/50/13's that look like they stick way out of the wheel wells, and rubbing problems?

So many questions, so little clues...

I don't think a 13" wheel will fit over the GSL-SE brakes, but I could be mistaken.

TIm Schuh here in DFW was running 13x8's on his 84SE. Not sure if much was stock or what, but I don't think he switched to smaller brakes..

Speaking of autocross, did you see SCCA has a changed the location of the event on the 26th? It’s Now at Peddington, not Waco.

Chuck is correct, I’ve got a set of 13” off a non –SE, they hit the brakes before they get to the hubs, yes I do know the bolt pattern is different.

If you plan to run a full season of SCCA and/or ER next year, you may want to see what tire mfg. is going to be doing the tire giveaways. Go to http://autocross.com/texasregion/indexflash.swf and select free tires.

Tim had the white 84 SE running in CSP. I know he was out at TMS, I talked to his fiance there... A shorter guy, real nice. He's the president of the DFW rx7 club.

And yes, I did see that they switched the location. Sweet, don't have to drive hours now!!! I'll certainly be out there running.

Don’t recall him, sign of age, or heat, or something like that, I forget. What was the question?

Maybe you can get 13” around the brakes by using steel wheels? What’s the price difference in the 13” tire vs. the 14” tire? Or could you could step up to a 15”?

I just figured the 13" would be smaller and therefore change the gearing to be lower for the autocross. otherwise 15" would probably be the ticket..

How much of a change would you achieve by dropping to a 13”?

Take a peek at this: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/plusone.htm interesting stuff.

alright, to try to answer your questions, and generate a few more, the gearing difference is about 8%.

This is a link to a similiar thread I've got going on DFW RX7 forum.

Now I know there are other people out there who run race rubber on there cars, someone help me out here...

GSLSE,

It won't make much of a difference at all. I know that's a fairly vague answer, but my advice to you would be to keep your 14" wheels and spend the money you would have spent on 13s to but a different ring and pinion. A 4.44 ring and pinion costs $380 from Mazda Comp (obviously, it's cheaper if you can find one in a junk truck). A 4.44 will make a much larger difference than 13" wheels. A 4.88 or 5.12 would be even better for autox, but those ratios aren't real great for street use.

Another option would be to try and find a 14" tire with a shorter sidewall.
