You cannot use the factory sender with an aftermarket gauge. You can install the new sender at he engine block heater location and the drivers sdie of the engine block near the bottom. Its a hex screw.

Be carefull, that thread is 1/8" BSPT not the 1/8" NPT that your sensor will be. The pitch difference is 27 TPI verses 28 TPI. I have heard guys having zero problems then again I have heard of guys that could never get it to properly seal up.
The proper way to do it would be to use an adaptor. McMaster Carr part number 4860K141 is what you want.

is it a given you can't use factory sender and auto meter gauge ?
i have wired mine up like this...i get the usual reading on my stock temp gauge and i get a reading of around 80 degree celcius on my auto meter gauge.
