You will need them only if you don't currently have them as they are not torque to yield bolts. There is also a lock washer on each bolt that you will need. And be sure to follow the torque spec when torquing the pressure plate bolts.

Also of note, two of the bolts are longer and will only thread in their deeper threaded hole on the flywheel.

Exactly. Two of the bolts are shouldered bolts. The two shouldered bolts are the longer of the set.

Pedal swap question

How difficult is the auto to manual pedal assembly swap? I have the manual set, will I need more bolts etc since it’s a bigger assembly?
Any tips appreciated!

You will need a brake and clutch pedal assembly. I think when I did mine I swapped in a manual brake pedal and through bolt and left the mounting bracket as it was the same as the manual transmission bracket.... you will have to swap in the entire clutch pedal assembly which is not terribly difficult. It is bolted to the dash frame if I remember correctly.

Here is a link to the threads that I created when I did my auto to manual transmission swap. The pictures are blurry courtesy of Photobucket but may still help some.

Awesome thread thanks! I don’t have the manual starter bolts, can I obtain those locally?

You can try the local parts stores but it's pretty doubtful that you will source them locally. Mazda may still offer them for sale. I can look up the part numbers if you'd like. Or create a want to buy ad in the 1st gen parts section if they are NLA from Mazda.

Pedal assy swap

Does the steering column need to come out to swap the pedal assy? I’ve got all the bolts out it’s all loose, can’t drop pedal assy frame down far enough due to steering column. Advise appreciated!

On my 1985, I only had to remove the long bolt that holds the pedals and replace with the new clutch and brake pedals. Didn't have to remove the box. Hopefully the 1979/1980 are just as easy. I took some captures for the 1979-1980 parts manual that shows which parts are auto and which are manual. The box itself is the same.

I also want to extend my powder coating to your project. Just pack a box up with all the parts you want coated and pay return shipping and I'll do them.

Looks like this 79 is different, no long bolt.

Looks like the everything is the same except the auto doesn't have the clutch pedal and it's associated hardware. I've looked over the parts fiche but can't see what replaces the clutch pedal portion on the bolt. I bet there is just a spacer on the auto one.

Could be, I’ll look again tomorrow. Might post a pic of the manual set I have .
Really appreciate the help!

Are the two longer bolts the top ones?

I have an auto pedal assembly here you can look at for comparison. I think it's from an '83. I believe the long bolt KC referred to is the one the pedals hang / pivot on.

I found this pic of the pedal layout when I did my 1985 auto-to-manual swap.

Booster too big?

I think this is where the clutch master will mount, the brake booster seems to overlap ?

You need a brake booster from a 1979-1980 manual car. I thought the 1979-1980 boosters where the same between auto and manual. Not sure if that one is factory for this year or not. The 1979-1980 brake booster is really small compared to the 1981-1985.

Reference for a 1980

Yikes, that booster does look big. On an '85 (pictured below) they're close but not overlapping like that. I don't think you can get a new or reman booster anymore, but there are threads about using boosters from other cars. Also there are adapters to eliminate the booster al together, if you want a good leg workout.

The 1979 auto and manual share the same brake booster. Found this on rock auto. Factory part number is 887143800A or 8871-43-800A

Thanks! I read somewhere that the 80 booster is an improvement over the 79, any truth to that?
