auto to man???

My buddy is putting a 12a from an 82 automatic into his 84 with a five speed. I know that he will need a flywheel and matching counterweight, clutch (duh), but my real question is how the flexplate is attached and how hard it is to remove and install the pilot bearing and etc. Basically, how much work am I looking at here to do this swap. I have a 79' flywheel and counterweight that we are going to use with a 84 tranny. Any help that you all could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

well if you are using the stock flywheel, the counterweight is built into it so you dont need a seprate one.

Man, I just posted about this a few days ago. I found an auto motor on ebay a couple hours away from me, but someone else wants it more than me, so doesnt look like i'll get it. (that you? ***.)
Anyways, what I recently came to understand is that you will need to swap both the front and rear counterweights and use a 79-82 flywheel.

Now, I've never done this so someone feel free to chime in, but my understanding is that auto motors are balanced for auto trannies, and hence, use different counterweights, both front and rear. And, naturally, you'll need counterweights and a flywheel from that type motor. (Or a lightweight steel one)
I dont know the specific weights for the different years, but I believe there were 2 different weights from 79-85. I THINK the counterweights and flywheels match from 79-82 and 83-85.

If I were going to do this, I'd call atkins rotary or mazdatrix for the final word.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replys, but what about the pilot bearing?? Does the E-shaft from an automatic engine even have the hole for it? I would assume that it does, but is there something there that i will need to remove to install the pilot bearing? Is the flexplate attached with the big 2+1/8 Nut?? I have never messed with a automatic 12a before, so I really dont know what to expect.

Why don't you get a light flywheel (steel or aluminum) for it? Then you won't have to change any of the counterweights and your motor will retain it's balance. You also would not have to remove the 54mm nut which can be a royal pain. As to whether there is a pilot bearing in the AT motor, my instinct tells me there is, but that's just a guess. You'll find out soon enough when you pull the AT. I seem to remember looking at a light flywheel on eBay very recently. At least you are not putting a MT motor in a formerly AT equipped car, that's a lot more work, at least it was when I put a 5-speed in my formerly auto-transmission RX4. You would not believe how hard it is to find an RX4 pedal set. -WG
