Attn: What to do about spamming buggers

Hey Everyone,

As I'm sure most of you have noticed, we have a bugger who keeps coming onto the forum spamming religious messages in many different sections.

I (and other moderators) have received complaints about it and rest assured, we're doing everything we can to prevent the spammer from continuing his/her/its nonsense.

The spammer is on an AOL dialup connection, so his IP address changes every time he logs off/onto the internet. So banning him by IP has proved less than successful. We ban the accounts he creates by accountname, but he creates new ones.

We're gonna keep on it, we're investigating other alternatives. For now, if you see the spammer, report the post using the "Report This Thread" function after making your witty reply. That way us mods will see it as soon as we check our email or sign in. As omnipresent as mods may seem sometimes, we don't spend 24/7 on the forum, so reporting threads gets them dealt with quicker.

Jon

Mod is right hard to get rid of people like that. IP, email account, and other such things can be created on the fly with out much effort at all. I have to deal with spammers on a daily basis. my email system currently blocks over 200 ip address from known spammers and some are ranges of dynamic ISP's IP address. but on a forum they get really hard to deal with and sometimes must be delt with in the matter of not allowing words like jesus or christ.. and then people on the forum cant say jesus christ or for christ sake and junk like that... just put a cookie on the computer that if matching words or what have you will email you each time the computer connects to the inter net or have it im you then you can just be mean and install an old virus called bymer and just format there HD.

or you could...

just shoot them and allowing god to sort them out.

Threaten legal action against AOL if they don't kill his internet account.

Disallow free email services (gmail, hotmail, Yahoo mail).

Can you tell if its a person or automation thats doing the spamming ? If its automation maybe a captcha can be setup when you post that can help defeat it. I'm sure you all have thought of this but just wanted to throw it out there.

Cheap way to help curb problem.

Block Key words, like "Wodihor" suggested, has worked good for me, I own dating sites, and I block words like AOL, Yahoo, earthlink... this way members cant add e-mail address to avoid upgrading.

hell, I'm a mod here and I'm registered with a hotmail account.

Whoever it is will either tire of it soon or we'll find a way to take permanant action. Either way, I thought this thread would be a good way to stop some of the PM's I've been getting that say "Can't you moderators do your forkin' jobs properly, I could do so much better against spammers... blah blah blah...".

And a good way to remind you guys that there's a "report post" function for the posts that need action.

The free webbased email thing isn't a fun thing to do, but some forums have actually done that in the past, and still do (the [H]ard|Forum does).

Just a suggestion, really. ^_^

free account or not.. if it is just basic religious spammer and are really taking the time could reg a domain name and crap and have lagit email addies. as an admin fighting these things are sometimes loosing battles. and you could cause more harm than good. lagit people that my have info to share and those that need help might be discouraged from having an email sent to them then click on the email then come back to the website and then fill out one of those little crappy generated deals... bah bah bah...but hell what ever it take...

guess wone of the better things to do would be for everyone to just ignore there post. report and mods will get around to deleting when they have the time. or we could all demand that they put there lifes on hold to get rid of it that instance... prob a bad idea... i don't like pissed off mods.

Post a picture of the dude in a thong on the hood of an FD on the forum background.

That should get rid of them and many other people, too
