Attn: 2nd gen oil cooler on former water/oil cooler 12a

Ok, anyone who has went through the process of doing this, let me know what you did.

So far, I got a free oil-cooler from a '87 Turbo which was running good till it was taken out. IT is to be used with a heavily modd'd 12a that will generate the need for it over the stock water/oil cooler. Everything else is ready including oil filter mount, single heater hose connection without the T-connection for the water/oil cooler.

So today I mounted in about the same location the GSL-SE model has it at. I installed it with some space for the oil fittings to get through ok. These coolers have the oil fittings in different locations then on the GSL-SE or early 12a ones. I see that likely that I may have to cut a hole through the side panel that mounts to the radiator, but thats no big deal.

THe big question is, did you use 2nd gen oil cooler lines or did you make your own? But seriously, I want the answer to be 2nd gen lines because I can save a lot of hassle and just get a used set. But I don't want to if it won't work.

I used the 2nd gen lines, trimmed the radiator panel, and hacksawed off the T fitting to a I fitting I also installed it using the T2 mounting brackets bolted onto the round tube thingy in front of the radiator. Then I blew that motor up.

So 2nd gen lines will work ok? Exactly what I wanted to know be fore I get a set. I can't really take the ones off my '88 car to test a theory. Thanks on the thumbs up and sorry about your engine blowing up.

I have for stupid reasons placed a 2nd gen oil coller on my gsl-se and I used earl's lines, and angle aluminum to mount it before the radiator, then just plumb the earl's lines properly. the reason I did not use the second gen lines was that steel pipe coming from the rear connection, and cloth hoses tend to leak after time, so hell spend the 150 on earl's lines, the look great. good luck.

I'm using FC lines for my cooler, but only because they are Mazdatix SS lines that I paid $$$ for when they were on my FC.

Here it is while I was lining it up:

And its hard to see, but it wound up being angled becuase I suck at making brackets. I had to cut holes in the radiator support too.

I didn't have any real trouble mounting it, infact I only needed to buy two L-brackets and fits just about the same as a GSL-SE, but was concerned about how to plumb the lines into it under the radiator and off to the side. I really wish they would of put the hoses in like in the GSL-SE. But they are made 2nd gen coolers with the 2nd gen chassis in mind....

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know if some hydrolic parts place could make me a set of custom lines and have bango like fitting like the ones on these cars?

When putting in your oil cooler why not put in some new filters? If you get them from summit they are not to much. I had the lines made at a hydralic shop. Cost $58 But if you do this you need to get the fittings from Racingbeat.com Here are some pixs: http://my7.rx-7.org/Paul/engine1-12-02.htm
