Atkins rotary carburetor
Atkins rotary carburetor
Hey, I’m new to the forums so I’ll give a bit of an introduction. Just bought a 1985 gsl rx7 with a 12a for a steal of $100 got lucky and the old guy who sold it to me just wanted to find someone who would restore the car to its former glory. The car came with all original parts and extras but it’s mostly disassembled and it’s been sitting for about 8 years so the spiders and rats have had some fun with it. I’m currently in the process of cleaning and reassembling the car, the engine turns over great but I haven’t got it running because the fuel tanks rusty and ignition systems shot. The car has about 250,000 kms on it though so I’m planning to rebuild the 12a relatively soon.
I’ve been thinking about getting parts off atkins rotaries, they seem affordable. I was wondering if their parts and service quality is worth the savings, I was also wonder If anyone has tried their 48IDA carburetor, I noticed it’s manufactured in house by them, I’m thinking of going with a larger street port or maybe a half bridge when I rebuild the engine has anyone tried that carb for those applications?

They have a good assortment of parts. One thing to be aware of, on their site they will list the Mazda part number but they part my NOT actually Mazda OEM part. But it could be. If looking for factory OEM parts, just be aware.
Another thing in general, is that parts, even aftermarket, can be hard to find. Places like RockAuto are starting to run out because parts makers are not making first gen RX-7 parts.
Also look at MazdaTrix.

Hey Ryan, welcome from a fellow Canadian.
My best recommendation for an engine build is to first determine what your intentions are for your restoration project.
Porting and adding a 48IDA carburetor are popular performance upgrades and cleans up your engine bay nicely, however from what I've read online you will sacrifice some day to day drivability.
Most of Mazda's advancements in rotary engine technology involve improved air/fuel control with the use of fuel injection. If you invest in a modern day fuel injection system and a Standalone Engine Management System, you will improve both performance and drivability.
Since you listed your location as Victoria BC as well as Calgary AB, you do have access to RX Specialties in Calgary. Adam is a pretty good guy and can help you with your project if needed.
Keep in mind that driving through the beautiful Rocky Mountains may be challenging to tune an older carb design. A rough estimate is one to two jet size reduction for every 1,000-foot elevation increase. Even without the elevation change driving through the mountains, you're looking at going from sea level (Victoria) to 3500 feet above sea level in Calgary.
Let's start with posting some photos of your '85 GSL.
