Arr box improvment mod
Ok, so were all a bunch of cheap.............I mean frugal consumers here. Ive been racking my brain to come up with some stuff for the 1st gen crowd, and this is the first product. Its a modification kit for the stock air filter box that enhances flow. This better breathing gives improved performance through the entire RPM band. It will be sold as a retrofit kit for the DIY crowd. Now that the trials are done, I am going to focus on making this availible for emissions and non-emissions applications. I'm gauging interest for this product so please vote. Also in the pipeline will be an add on drop in flow enhancement piece which should give more flow. As far as price, we're shooting for the $50-75 range. Oh what is it? Its a new base that replaces the existing one. It will come with the bell and a stud extension for the hold down.
Here are some numbers
For reference all tests were uncorrected raw numbers at the standard 1.5"hg.
Bare carb- 315 CFM
Carb with Stock airbox w/paper filter 254 CFM
Carb with Stock airbox w/ dirty K&N 259 CFM
Carb with modded box w/paper filter 272 CFM
Carb with modded box w/ dirty K&N filter 279 CFM
Cutting open the sides of the box yielded more flow worth 310 with a paper filter and 315 with the dirty K&N, meaning that for all intents and purposes there was no obstruction of flow by the filter.

A K+N that fits the stock 12a box won't fit, will it?

Yes it will, thats one reason for going this way. I know alot of you guys have already invested the $40 or so for a K&N to fit the stock box. I dont wanna see you have to throw it away.

Neat. Unfortunately I have only a vague idea what your picture is trying to show. How much of the air cleaner box would this replace exactly? Would it be possible to still use a CAI?

Oh heres a couple of really bad pics of the prototype. Notice, the box is cut open for maximum flow, but can be left stock and a CAI can still be used as this only replaces the crappy stack and hold down which restrict airflow.

Thanks Toxic and Makwana. It's just the bell, and the stud, nut and washer. The stuff you need to convert yours. If I were to take the time to do it, I'd have to charge labor and that would drive the price up, considering shipping and all. I'm trying to keep my stuff as economical as possible. Greg, what you propose would work ok also, but I would consider the size of cone filter youll need. HKS makes a nice one, not a cone but bell shaped like my bell. Allows for better flow. Its also $100 for one with a 4" inlet. But to each his own. I know that will flow well also as I have one I bought a long time ago. Those cheap riceboy 3" cone filters I bet wont flow worth a crap. I'd put $ on it.

Jake, yes its similar to the RB setup from what Ive seen in pics. I dont know what their flow numbers are since I dont have one in my possesion.
Greg, Understood. So how much $ is this filter? I know you have setup your Kennmore intake already, so Im just lookin as to how much more are you spending?

the cone filter im wanting is $50 dollars IIRC, and i will use 3 inch ABS to route it to the front of the car (ABS is cheap)
im hoping to spend no more than 60-70 dollars

Sorry Greg, my mistake. Yea Chris sent me pics of his intake, not bad, I love ghetto hot rodding. Cool, your choice of course, but this is right in your price range.
Yes the hood will still close.
