The ignition coil fires when it's no longer receiving power. Simply breaking the circuit (on either the positive or negative side) causes it to fire. This is, in fact, what the distributor does. If you instead pull the negative side of the coil to ground, you're basically bypassing the distributor and the coil stays in "charging mode" without firing.
