Anyone install the EQ/cass into a GS?
Anyone install the EQ/cass into a GS?
Folks, I may pick up this GS for sale. It doesn't have the factory stereo with joystick and a factory sunroof, options that I really like.
My question: has anyone installed the factory EQ and joystick into an 84/85 GS? How much of a pain is it? Will I need the GSL radio as well?
Thanks!!!!

P.S. Yes, I know the factory stereo is nothing special from a sonic perspective.
However, the nice touch controls, unique joystick control, EQ that lights up, and the champagne finish are unique features that helps make up the 1st Gen's charm...

Your gonna need quite a bit of the harness too, the DIN cords run to the amps in the back, I beelive it all could be seperated from a junk car, but i dont see the point...
You can get a Pioneer CD player from walmart for $129, it will sound a shitload better..

Thanks DF... do you know if the wiring there for the joystick and EQ, or will I need to "plumb" the system?
I seem to remember some speaker install facts from many years ago in my friend's then new 1980 GS. He went to install rear speakers and found -- voila -- rear speakers already there. Turns out Mazda installed the speakers and wiring. They just weren't hooked to the head unit. Must be cheaper to build them all one way than to figure out on the line which unit gets different stereos.

Many people don't know this, but the GSL's only use the FRONT output on the radio- which then gets split into front and Rear at the joystick.
The Radio has two outputs, one front and one rear though.
I recommend you forget it, get Manntis's radio system tray, and listen to Mike-P. Get an aftermarket one. Mike is biased towards Pioneer though..
Me no Likey Pioneer...
Alex and I both have the Sony MP70 CD/CDR/MP3/XM deck. Not sure if Alex has hooked his up yet but I'm running mine through Infinity speakers with just the in-deck amp and I'm happy as a clam

The wiring IS there. Right where the joystck goes is a connector that splits the signal to the two amps. The Joystick basically replaces this "Y" cable so you can play with the signal sound.

So the signal comes from the radio to the Y connector (or joystick) and then goes to seperate amps? Where are the amps located?

Yes , the amps are located in the back behind the seats , the are mounted verticaly inside the storage bins, they are silver finish, with Clarion written on them.
