Anyone have a picture of an adapter for a 12a into GSL-SE swap?

Hey,
I know this sounds stupid, but I am putting my 12a in my widebody until I build up a TII motor. A local RX7 guru was telling me that you can easily make adapters to easily mate the engine mounts from the GSL-SE to the 12a engine?

Is there a easy way to do this, or will I have to swap the whole 12a crossmember over only to swap it back when I do the TII conversion? I don't have a front cover from a 13B so I don't know how else I am going to get this thing in there...

And one more question while im thinking about it, if I swap the engine tranny from the GSL will it mate right up with the GSL-SE driveshaft? Are the driveshafts the same length between the two cars???

Thanks for your suggestions guys

Hehehe...I did exactly thr same thing to my old GSL-SE.

All that I did was slot the mounting holes on the front crossmember towards the back of the car and the 12A dropped right in...no problems what-so ever.

I also used the 12A tranny...but now I cant remember if I used the 12A driveshaft or the GSL-SE driveshaft......
If you have both..one of them will work

Simple. Just put a 20mm spacer between the front cover and the bracket.

Bump, im interested to know what you mean by this. What type of spacer are you talking about?

Right now the car (the GSL-SE) has the 2 engine mounts, but there is no bracket... Is it easier to find the bracket and do it that way or to slot the cross member or what?

Im going to be doing the engine swap within the next couple of weeks so I would like to get this planned out ahead of time to prevent complications.

Thanks a ton!

The easiest way to get around it is to cut the end like this pix and use large washers. This wont slide forward at all since the engine is bolted to the tranny and its is heavy.

OR

OR

spend $$ and time in drilling it.

Am I missing something here? Wouldn't it be just as simple to pick up a 12a mount and be done with it?

12A and 13B engine brackets are the same. The difference is in the crossmember. That's why RB sells a bracket specifically for putting a 13B in a 12A car.

A 12A is 20mm shorter than a 13B right. So therefore all you need to do is put a 20mm spacer between the engine bracket and front cover in effect making the engine the same length as a 13B.

ok ok, now I understand!

Do I need to get longer bolts for the front cover then to accomodate for that extra 20mm?

Thanks!

Update? Thanks.

also does anyone know the bolt grade/thread pattern etc for these front bolts? Or can I use the stock bolts with a 20mm spacer, are they long enough? Thanks for the help, im trying to plan this all before I have the hoist borrowed because I only have it for a weekend and need to do the swap quick.

BUMP! I really need to know if these are studs that I need to get or if they are bolts? The thing is I can't take the bolts out until the motor is out, and when the motor comes out I need to get it in the other car right away because I don't have the hoist for long...

need a update, the engine is sitting in the car right now and I have a question...

Is looks like there is 2 spots for the tranny mounts (2 sets of screws on my GSL-SE), the GSL-SE tranny mounted in the ones furthest to the back of the car and it appears that the 12a would mount right up to the ones that are about 1.25" ahead of them. Is this true? Or am I just getting carried away thinking that I won't need to do the whole spacer thing?

but if it does just bolt right in like that, wouldn't the driveshaft have to be a different length? Or do the transmission outputs gears come out at different points to make the driveshaft the same length for both models?

I really need your opinions, the motor is just sitting in the car and I need to return the engine hoist in a couple days...

The extra holes your'e asking about are not used on the 84gsl on jackstands in my garage, or my 85gs dd.
Sorry I don't know the bolt size you will need for the spacers.
