Anybody remove a fuel tank from an 85?

Im draining the tank as we speak due to periodic clogging (almost left me stranded 45 minutes away from my house yesterday).
The Chilton is VERY sketchy on this writeup so I was hoping someone who has done this before could give me some pointers.
Thanks
Justin

Very easy. Unscrew the filler cap and then unscrew the filler neck. Remove the float behind the driver side rear wheel minding it's orientation for when you put it back on. Set a jack under the tank and loosen the straps. Lower the tank until the fiel lines are accessable and then release the fuel lines. Done.

Many times, unfortunately. Remove gas cap, unbolt fillerneck. Underneath, remove plastic shield. then loosen the rear stap bolts as far as you can, yet still supporting the tank, move to the front bolts and loosen them. At this point you have fuel lines to deal with.

I usually remove the lines from the pump, the returnline anr the vapor line, then unbolt the 2 check valves from the body, dropping the tank with all the lines attatched. Doing it this way makes hooking the lines back up during install easier. While the tank is down, replace all of the old lines.

The hardest part is the filler and vent lines. Once the tank is down far enough, you can get to the clamps, but the problem is the rubber lines are often rusted to the metal tubes. That can be a fight.

When reinstalling, shoot WD-40 or PB Blaster on the metal tubes and inside the rubber lines. Dry humping the lines back on is a pita.

Did mine 3 weeks ago as stated above. Bitch puttin back in with only one person, trying to line up that filler neck. Very important, remove the plastic shield on the drivers side and remove the plug for the fuel level sending unit. Mine was so corroded that it just fell apart ($11 for a new one!) There is also a metal shield on the tank protecting the fuel lines that need to be removed.

Well I dropped the tank, cleaned it out, now Im preparing to put it back in. I noticed that the filter on the pickup line inside the tank wasn't made for the FB. Would it be alright to submerge a hose clamp (one of the stainless screw types) for long periods of time in gasoline? The reason I ask this is because I want to anchor the small tab on the filter against the return line inside the tank so that when I insert the lines back into the tank, the filter doesn't fall off. I would replace the filter, but it looks so clean, it wouldn't make sense....plus I live in an area where Rx parts are unheard of.

nevermind, I used my brain this time... I bent the return line a little towards the inlet line so it holds the filter in place. Its not like im using the return anymore anyways

Oh, I mentioned $11 for the fuel level sending unit, it's $111. So don't break it. A little dielectric greese will be nice to avoid corrosion.

I taped the pad to the tank, but I guess you never know...not all that worried anymore because I just got it in
Would anybody know which wire goes where for the fuel level sender? Im assuming that there was a clip there at one time, but now there are three wires with female clips on each of them. There is a yellow, yellow/blue, and black wire.

I must have fooked up the sender somewhere along the way today, I found the plug diagram (http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/manuals/1985_RX7_FSM/85RX7(50)Wiring_Diagrams.pdf) and hooked it up correctly, but the little bitch doesn't work!

I forgot to ask about this earlier.. does the stock 85 GS tank have more than one chamber? It looks like its devided inside.. Also There are bolt holes on the chassis above the tank (they don't line up at all with this tank) that look to have had something mounted to them before....maybe the stock gas tank? I remember reading before that the GSL-SE tank is different from the 12A tanks.

Yes, there is a divider on both tanks. The ONLY difference between the tanks, is the fuel cup/sump/baffle in the SEs. The pickup units are different, but technically, they are not part of the tank.

That tank is a bitch to get back in. I did mine today after swaping the s tank for the gslse for my turbo swap. I too thought something was keeping the tank from letting that left strap hook up. I finally got it after loosening the front and rear bolt on that strap and lots of muscle.

Are you sure you've got the float in the right orientation?
