Any ignitors to use other than the Mazda ones?

Is there an alternative ignitor we can use other than the factory ones when wiring the car for direct fire ignition? The factory ones are awfully expensive and seem to be somewhat fragile if not wired and cooled(aluminum heatsink) properly with the direct fire system.

I'm trying to figure out my ignition problem and decided to wire it for direct fire but if my ignitors are bad I'm screwed until I get more.

You should check out the coil on plugs from the c5 vette.. I believe it has an ignitor in it, and only costs ~36 each..

Junkyard or ebay, you can get ignitors cheap there. I picked up one off ebay for $20 a couple months ago.

We used Bosch ignitors (part number: 9-222-067-021) on friends car. They're a lot cheaper and they work perfectly.

I'm going to experiment with HEI modules ($20 or so at parts stores) and Chrysler modules (ditto). Need a little rewiring but very minor.

peejay, were you going to use the largeish Chrysler ones from '72-'82+? I've experimented with one a bit and it makes decently sized sparks, but so did a J109 hehehahah! It was a little science class experiment for my bro where we were able to send high voltage arcs through a light bulb's glass. Yeah, through glass! Anyway, I was going to try an HEI ignitior too. They're way more plentiful and cheap (and smaller than the Chrysler style). I was quoted $25 or so from Schuck's.

the HEI module was used on all GM electronic distributors from '74 to the present. They're practically generic.

LT1s use a completely different setup, it has a distrbutor but it doesn't use a magnetic pickup, and it's known for its poor reliability. LS1s don't even have distrubutors, they have divorced coil on plug

The Bosch ignitor looks like it would be really easy to wire up for DLIDFIS.

in fact, the HEI module does too.

Are all HEI modules created equal? Is this something found in a typical junk-yard?

Don't bother from a junkyard, they're cheap enough brand new!

Leave the ones in the junkyard for people who are converting their '73-earlier GMs to electronic ignition.

In case anyone wants to use the Bosch module...

Pin #3 goes to the green pickup wire, pin # 7 goes to the red pickup wire, pin # 15 goes to 12V pos and the last pin goes to the negative side of the ignition coil.

The GM HEI ignitors have the standard B and C terminals for the coil. I used to know which terminals the red and green wires went to. W and G... sorry guys, I can't remember. But I know of a way I could get it to work.

I'm interested in learning more about the Bosches too.

Well, it probably won't help you much if I tell you since I'm in Australia. These modules were used on some late model GM Holden Commodores so they're readily available over here.

BTW, where did you get that pic from anyway?
