alternator woes
alternator woes
hey there i just finished installing a phoenix gold high output alternator on my 83 rx7
it sure gives me lots of voltage now, but its reading like 16 volts while driving, and i smelt some smoke, and my stereo sounded wack so i turned everything off including the car
when i have the two wires hooked up as shown on the conversion diagram, then all my sensors light up and stay lit up, but when i take one off the sensor lights go off, and it still works
which is weird
but im not sure whats wrong or if its safe, or how to stop the squealing of the belts...

u shoul dbe getting 14volts @ 3000rpm, if not then adjust ur voltage regulator, i dunno how u would do it on that altinator..
i drove around for 3 days with all my warning lights up when my altinator went, and the battery died the second i got in to the auto leccy..

16V is the very max it should be charging at, at max rpm
get a volt meter acrross the battery terminals and it should read
1000-3000 about 12-14
3000 and beyond -14 -MAX 16
u can buy urself a solid state volt regulator.. and then the hard bit is to figure out how to wire it up..
