alternator fire!!!
Or you could rebuild it yourself, I dont know if they sell them anymore but Autozone used to stock alternator rebuild kits, bearings, brushs, etc. Its a cakewalk, but I wouldnt recommend it unless you are mechanically inclined...

Electricity consists of 2 parts: Current (amps, or volume) and Voltage (pressure)
If it's steady then it's called DC and if it varies, usually household voltage, it's AC.
make totally sure it wasnt your water pump that failed, too. turn the water pump pulley by hand and make sure it spins freely.
i just had mine go on me and i can see how one would think it would be a alternator fire, because of the belt slipping over the other pullys it can get them extremely hot very fast and cause tons of smoke.

I just replaced mine about 3 weeks ago, autozone had one for like 55 bucks, I think you can even get it through their website. Or just do yourself a huge favor and replace it with the 110 amp GM alt, very easy as long as you can find a pulley that fits it.
