Alternator charging

82 RX-7, Alternator charges 14.25V. Sometimes it will stop charging, and then come on. When it’s not charging the idle switch will hang of about 10 sec. Right before it starts charging again the exhaust heat light will start flashing. This is the first time I have seen an alternator charge on and off. Also the only dash lights that are on when starting are Brake, seat belt, and exhaust overhead light.

Check the "choke relay" or whatever it is on the drivers side inner fender. Its a small bronze colord box with a plug (or two) going into the bottom of it. Clean the contacts there. Also, make sure the two wire plug that goes into the back of the alternator is plugged it. The choke relay is what makes all those lights come on when you first turn the key on. If they dont come on, its usually because something in there is messed up or unplugged. Good luck.
