I was wondering if there was any alternative coils I can use in a DLIDFIS setup on my 80.

Maybe some off a dohc v6 camry that has the coil plug, where the coil pops directly onto the sparkplug itself, for the leading.

Would the j109 ignitors fire it?

 

2nd gen RX-7 leading coil is unstoppable.Regularly used on 400+HP engines.
Its a dual tower,single ignitor unit that routes the spark directly to the leading plugs via a wasted spark,direct fire setup(stock configuration on 86-92 cars)
Add an MSD 6 box on the leading for even more potential.

 

Transistor Trick (from GSLSEAddict) + 2nd gen leading coil pack = excellent performance. Very simple installation and total cost should be under $50.00 Can't be beat in my opinion.

 

I get a serious kick out of how everyone calls things "tricks".

It reminds me of the old saying "Any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic".

And the corollary, "Any technology, no matter how trivial, looks like magic to people who have no clue how it works."

So, "I have no idea how anything works" = "it's a transisitor trick", "ATF trick", etc...

 

Well, I'm not the one that gave it it's official name.... I wanted to call it Transistor Magic instead!

I think Jeff20B came up with the name. It was just something to call it during development. I didn't think I would end up building them for people and such. The name just stayed with it. The circuit is pretty simple. Nothing mysterious about it. Just converts the J-109 signal to something the 2nd gen pack can use.

 

Yeah, it's a signal converter, or how about just a farkin' transistor.

any other alternatives besides the bulky second gen coils?

 

I imagine that you could use the Camry coils. You would need something like the TT to convert the signal as the Camry should take 0-5v square wave like the 2nd gen coils. (this is if you use the Camry ignitor). You could maybe fire the coil directly with the J-109. You would have to take a look at the primary coil resistance. You may have to add a ballast resistor if the resistance was too low for the J-109.
