Air to Nikki carb from outside motor bay

I did my best search for the Ghetto cold air post by one of the carb folks but found nothing. My desire is to get air from outside the motor bay to the Nikki carb. Experience is of value. Seat Dyno is of value. Real Dyno data is proof. (I'll take a minimal hp gain.)

Thanks ; )

The cheap and obvious way is to replace the black snorkel (assuming its still there) with a longer piece to draw air from behind the headlight.

IMHO its really not worth your time to bother with it. Take your half hour that you'd spend fiddling with that and replace some leaky vacuum line, tune your idle, and tighten down any loose bolts and fittings. Its still dirt cheap and you'll get more than a 'cold air intake' would.

I built a cold air system with 2 eldelbrock tri flow air cleaners. It sits on holley 390 with homemade adapter. Hose runs from snorkel down to rad air intake. Used v stack for intake and dryer duct hose. It gets a direct shot of air and uses the form air cleaner fron the tri flow. I would guess a 15% increase at 30 mph and up.

You'd probably get more power just from cuttin out a big section from the back of the air box. I've never tried it, but it seems like it would flow a lot more air than the snorkel. I do know that there are others who have done it. If you don't wanna cut the air box, at least remove the little "flapper valve" from the snorkel. It's easy, and I wanna say I could tell a slight difference without it.

A sidedraft draws through a K&N from the battery side ( not the hot exhaust side ) of the engine bay. I can hear the hell out of it and it ain't hot OR restricted.

Folks, the rats nest is gone, the OEM air cleaner has been Ghetto soothed, the carb is Pro blueprinted to the rules, a smooth flex tube is attached to the air cleaner bringing in outside the motor bay air & did I say the rules say the air cleaner is free. There are a bunch of items on the market for carbs & FI that are proven (Dyno, including cool air) but again nothiing proven for the Nikki. As I look down the Nikki there are several things that are illegal (rules) that would increase air flow. BUT............ As an example looking down at the carb top there are huge horizontal flat areas that I would think distrub the air flow. Being that the air cleaner is free one could attach something (non Ghetto) to the air cleaner with vertical slooped surfaces that would blend the air to the carb openings. It all starts under a shade tree......... : )

Long SS header to 3 inch tube up over the axle to a 3 inch muffler. The sound was 99db (of the 103 db max allowed) at 8 grand in 4th gear accelerating midway through a 180 degree turn. The 99 was on a cold crisp IL Oct day.

Continue the Fun ; )

Take the hood off.. Or cut a hole.. No seriosly, a vent cut in to the hood would help, but you dont want to cut in your beloved RX7 do you?
