so iam removing my rats nest and instead of cutting off the tubes and taping or welding them closed. i would like to get a after market k&n air filter setup. the problem is no one makes a base for our carb neck. i measured it to day and its 99 or 100 mm roughly 3.897 or 3.937 inches. if i cant find any thing i mite cut off the sides of the stock air filter assembly, go to the local parts store and find the widest k&n air filter they have that fits inside, then get a new top and longer stud. dose any one know of any one who makes a aire cleaner base that will fit our carb.

 

Racing beat carb filter kit will fit a K&N filter. You have to use a spacer (read: washers) to push the threaded post that comes with it up higher so the nut will go on, but it fits. i was looking for a open air filter setup. i new about the racing beat one tho. ive been doing a lot of research and cant find a base that will go on the stock carb. i think i mite just cut the sides off the stock blue air cleaner assembly, and get a filter that goes to the edges, and a new cover. i found a thread that some one kept the stock top but just cut away most of the sides leaving the latches mite do that.

does any one know if it would be ok to run a carb hat like the ones for a blow thou setup but on a na motor. if i do that i could make my own cold air ect. the only reason i haven't done this is because i heard it is and it is not a good idea. no 100% its ok and no 100% its a bad idea.

i wish rob from the shack would chim in, since if i do go the carb hat way id get it from him. since theres no way i can get that cool trick rotor carb hat.

an open filter works, but it sucks in hot air, which is bad.

you want something that sucks cold air, otherwise you might as well leave the stock air cleaner alone.

we looked at this way back in the 90's when pro7 was hot...

My car fell on it's face with a carb hat at 6500 rpm (blown 13b mind you). I had the racing beat air cleaner on my old 12a, other than sounding neat it didn't perform any better than my stock air cleaner with a k&n filter and an intake tube from a voyageur grafted on to the snorkel and fed beside the rad to take in fresh air up front. So take you pic, the open filter sounded and looked cool, but the modified stock setup work as well or better and cost me a new K&N filter (same either way, you gotta buy one), plus a stock air cleaner (you've got that) and a $3.00 trip to pick-n-pull.

 

By the way, this was my carb hat and huge k&n filter, $250 waste of money!

maybe it has to do with the volume of air inside being sucked in to fast with a blower.kinda like the setup didnt flow enough for a draw thru setup.

It was an old Holly Blow Through carb hat. The holly opening was too big for the nikki, so the holly opening got welded closed, and the other side of the carb hat (the "top") was cut the circumference of the Nikki, and a O-Band (a metal cylinder about 1 inch high)welded to the opening. The O-Band was tight enough to basically clamp on the Nikki with no need for a lower clamp. Drilled a hole at the top, threaded a longer carb rod down there and secured it with a wing nut.

My setup with the filter remote mounted in front of the rad would likely be okay for a 12a, even streetported, but it choked "my" engine off. I had dreams of running this with the filter enclosed under a capri scoop for fresh air.

I'm kinda limited by the "strut bars" up front, but want to do something similar to my SA that I did to my FC. Something tells me it won't be as easy...

Woohoo its been fun following Warwickben's lil journey cos im pretty much in the same boat as he... i want more power with an NA and i want to do it myself. tho i have a decent bank to do it. Im running a 12A and wish to change the airfilter to an open filter as well. Has anyone thought of redirecting the aircon straight into the airfilter? im a window warrior so i dont need aircon. I just want to know if il blow something up

you know i make cold air intake kit that works great.. tons of the local guys run them.. its not cheap to make them though..

if you guys get a group buy together i could do something..

the ones i make use a large plenum similar to the r/b base so the carb dosnt choke, then the large mandrel bent piping gets plumbed out of the engine bay in front of the A/C condensor/ radiator for the coolest air possible..
the extremists even get a huge mouth/ sheetmetal scoop that feeds the air inlet( ram air affect) these guys are happy with the results let me tell ya

Full exhaust, RB header and borla everything else. Cleared it nicely. The only thing that I had to move wast the coolant res, that was put where the stock charcoal canister went.

 

I thought I should pass on my findings to anyone who may be fabricating an intake. Mine is Ford powered, using 3 inch tubing, but this may be useful for a rotary also. I shopped around and found a source for the aluminum tubing that seems to be much cheaper than any other source I could locate - Verocious Motorsports.

The straight and mandrel bends are .065 thickness, which is substantial enough to weld easily, but still reasonably light. If you don't mind using stainless, you can usually find a kit on eBay for a reasonable price, with the silicon rubber connectors included, so you don't have to weld if you prefer not to:

Some of these kits have enough material and connectors to make several intake systems like mine.

The rubber connector in my photo is actually a cut-down plumbing connector from Home Depot, and is still soft and pliable after 4 years of driving. The air box is custom made from an intake off an old V6 Buick of some sort. I recently installed a new radiator and put the K&N conical filter out in front of the radiator. I am a realist about the cold air vs hot air from the engine compartment - on a hot day at max power it might be worth 1 or 2 horsepower if I am lucky. But now I can brag about my cold air inlet.
