Question Air Conditioner Pulley

I've got a 1984 GS, and my Air conditioner has been broken for quite some time now...

I've heard that, since the car does not use it anyway, removing the belt from the drive pulley to the air conditioner pulley could free up some power?

Does it? and is it okay to do? Thanks.

Oh, and when i opened my hood today, i noticed that it's been 18 years since the engine area has been cleaned. Everything is black and dirty. What's the best way to clean it? I don't want anything corrosive to the hoses.. thanks again

Oh.. one more thing...

What could an '84 GS stock beat (racewise)..
my friend's got a '99 acura integra with a new intake and header...
would he kill me?
My car runs fine.. it's got no problems whatsoever (really lucky.. it's pretty much mint condition, except for a tear in the driver's seat, small anyways)

Once again Thanks

it will free up the drag put on the engine but i doubt it will give you any horsepower increase, a stock gs vrs integra with intake and headers would kill you.. sorry but true if you get a full header exhaust and maybe a modifed carb you could take him..

Unless you can get an awesome start and your friend craps out on his, you will probably lose. I've beaten mid 90's Integras with my '85 GS but it has headers.

The a/c belt off won't give you any more noticeable power but not using the a/c will. As far as racing sometimes its the driver and not the car . It might be your day and not his. You have heard of the term upset?

As far as mechanical secondaries. Yes you will get a bog now and then thats why Holleys have an accelerator pump for the secondaries to prevent this. I would try and see if different springs were available for the secondary diaphram. If not try cliping a little off the one there and see if it improves opening sooner for you.

remove that AC belt, and if you are so inclined, all the ac stuff. I used the good old fashioned coin op car wash on mojo and it did wonders, just keep the dizzy as dry as you can, and oh yeah.......that teg will spank you (all else being equal)!

i took off the belt an definitely felt an increase. not a kick in the pants increase, but definately snappier acceleration. a friend of mine did that to his 7 back in high school. we would race on an abandoned runway and were always dead even. one day, he started pulling away. he wouldn't tell me why for a couple weeks! lol i keep the belt in the storage bin with a small ratchet set. if it gets hot out, 5 mins and the AC is back online.
as far as cleaning the engine bay, i like simple green. just spray the hell out of the engine(careful around the distributor) and give it a good brush scrubbing. unfortunately for me, the last owner of my car had undercoating haphazardly sprayed in the engine bay. now it always looks like crap even when its clean.
