Air bubbling in the fuel filter?

I had not started in a while and turned the key and let the fuel pump run for a few minutes to get gas to the carb, as it didn't have any. that worked, but I looked under there and there was bubbling into to fuel filter.

what might cause this?

the fuel line goes from tank to filter then to fuel pump.

Air getting into the line at either end of the connection or a split somewhere. Do you smell gas or see small drips under that area?

No gas smell, but I’m stumped. Think this might be the final tweak in my build. This is like my 4th fuel filter....my pops just said the tank is crap based on that.. I.e. the intake coming out of the tank has a hole/rust in it.

it has bubbles in the system. No doubt. Car stumbles under any major acceleration...I.e not driveable w/o AAA

my next move is to fill it to the brim w gas to see if there is a whole in the intake/straw going into the tank.

let me know if you guys think of anything, cause finding a 1980 tank won’t be easy.

Best bet is to siphon out as much fuel as you can and remove the tank and see what's in there. If not too rusty a radiator shop can dip it and clean it out and you can or they can reseal it. Pretty much need to start at the tank, deal with that, purge all the fuel lines, likely carb will have some of whatever's in the tank in it too and need to be disassembled for cleaning. While tank is out, inspect hard supply line from tank to filter for rust or pinholes-especially at top of tube where air can get in but fuel won't leak out.
Better to approach it this way and fix it once and be done with it for a reliable car than trying this or that hoping for a good outcome.

Ordered new 3/8 fuel Line fuel filter some new hose, and clamps and por fuel tank sealant. Pulling tank today and soaking in vinegar water a few days and gutting the old plumbing before resealing the tank. Might need to add a different tank intake if one has pinholes in it on the inner side of the tank. Need 3/8 line for v8 anyway. It’s starving for fuel and I think it’s hole in the fuel pickup on inside of tank combined with 5/16 fuel line. And it keeps filling the fuel filters with rust. We’ll see.

FYI, got it all installed, and no more clogged fuel filter and no more dying out engine when I get on the gas. vinegar and water mix in tank for 3 days and the por product worked very well.

my return line to the tank may have been too big/not crinped enough contributing to the lack of fuel. ether way, shes fixed.
