Aftermarket air cleaner available?

My air filter got burned up. I thought I would just get a chrome aftermarket filter with open sides but the throat opening is too big. Has anyone fabricated an adapter or does anyone know of a supplier for an air filter that will fit the Nikki carb? Thanks.

Just cut the sides off of yours. Only leave vertical pieces where the snap clips go to hold the lid on, then throw a K&N in there and call it good .

A couple of the people here (myself included) have replaced the stock upper air box plate (the blue, removable disc that says "Mazda Rotary") with a plexiglass disc which only covers the top of the air filter, effectively opening up the "donut-shaped" area around the filter, and allowing a more efficient flow of air into the engine. To attach it, you just buy a 8mm 1.25 module coupler nut and an appropriately sized bolt, and replace the wingnut with the coupler nut, and then drill a hole in the plate, then run the bolt through that, threading it into the coupler nut.

I'm not entirely sure that's what you were getting at, but thats one option to increase airflow into the carb, regardless of what filter you have (although it does work better with a K&N, due to their higher flow capacity, and smaller outer diameter).

Here's a pic of my intake. It's very similar to what 357 has described. I run a K&N filter.

My stock filter burnt up. The rubber gaskets under and on top of the air filter are gone. I saw these gaskets in VB for $22 but I'm cheap. I want something better and prettier if I'm going to spend money. I saw that Racing beat has one but it's $50 with no filter. If I could figure out how to adapt the 3 7/8" opening of the Nikki to the standard 5" (approximate) 4 barrel air filter I could get a new chrome filter with element from Auto Zone for $16.

I bought one of those awhile back from either from AutoZone or Advanced. It was the 6 5/8" round air cleaner, and it came with a black plastic adapter and was surprised that it fit the stock carb. Good luck.

And a closeup of the way i attached it:

Yes, those are cracks. I was being stupid with the power drill that day. If you have trouble seeing the pics, go to My Rx-7 Gallery and then click on the "My Rx-7" gallery. They should be the last 2 pics on page 2.
