Afm

can you bypass or test the air flow meter? I have an 85 se and I can't keep it running. I can get started long enough to warm up,but it kills in about ten/fifteen minutes. I'm sure it is not the fuel,(maybe fuel injectors) and when the car is cool I can open the door on the AFM and the car will start RIGHT up.

A little more detail ?

Yes you can check the AFM, but not bypass it. The easy way to check it is not that easy. You need to expose the ECU under the passenger side floor and check the ECU pin by pin. Not easy to do if you don't have the manual. I could give you the pins to check, but...
I'm not sure that's your problem.

You mention "After it warms up it stalls" and
"when the car is cool I can open the door on the AFM and the car will start RIGHT up."
Two completely different symptoms, it seems.
The only reason I can see for the car starting while holding the AFM flap open is the fuel pump switch in the AFM. It operates the fuel pump once you release the ign key from Start to Run. But if it runs at all, without holding the flap open, it's not the AFM fuel switch. And I see no other reason that holding the flap open would help you start. If it runs when cold and stalls when warm, the AFM is not likely your problem.

Again, "when the car is cool I can open the door on the AFM and the car will start RIGHT up."
Is that the only way the car will start? Do you also mean it will not start when warm?
A little more detail would help. A starting problem and a warm stalling problem may be related, maybe not. Better to say too much in your posts than too little. What is the history? Has it been running well to this point? What else have you tried?

Common injector problems would give you flooding or high rpm missing problems, but would not likely cause it to stall when warm. Not the first place to look.
My thoughts,
-John.

The car was a project car for a friend,I paid pennies for it. It has a new engine with 8000 miles on it,and a nikki turbo. the car will start only when it is in the mood, and to get it started when hot/warm I have to deflood it or use atf.the car has great compression on it, the rotar seals feel really nice. the car floods out alot and this guy told me that it was the afm. I have two other 85's,but both are 12a's. I can handle everthing on the 12a,but I know little about fuel injections. if you can lead me in sometype of direction I would greatly appreciate the help. email me

Sorry,

If it has a turbo on it, the usual logic doesn't apply. If you don't know about the injected engine, and it has a turbo on it... Sounds like a project to me. I wish I could help, but not having a clue about the setup, I don't know what to suggest.
