i had the same problem with my car, minus the smoke. i changed the fuel filter and had to bypass the fuel pump relay. that fixed that problem then the ignitor went out. so while it was in down time i did the ATF treatment and then when it got back to running it ran muhc much better. you can bypass your fuel pump relay and that may fix it. do a search for it in the forum. some gave me a diagram of how to and it was very simple.
heres a link to what i was talking about:

You can usually get all the interior parts you need, used but in pretty good shape, by keeping an eye on ebay, the local junk yards and the parts section of this forum. The seats are the hardest part, but if you are patient a nice set will come along. This will save some time and labor and will keep the car more original. If you do the body prep work yourself, you should be able to find a friend or a local shop to paint it for a few hundred bucks, or maybe a high school shop project? Keep up the good work!

the interior is red(i wish it were black but it will be to much to redo the whole thing) the seats are fine the carpets good. the back is perfect except the arms dont hold, but im getting them at the local car parts store(is there anyway i can get the hatch to open and stay by just pushing the button. and theres some curly wire hanging down that i dont know what they are(in the back in front of the arms) every thing on the inside is fine except the sun has cracked the dash horribly, the twisty thing for the roof looks like it had something glued on it thats not there now. the cups for the door handles are not there any more, the window channels are all cracked. some of the buttons are kinda bad. the console plastic stuff looks kinda faded. and the door panels and some of the other panels are torn up, other than that everything is perfect. on the outside the gsl logo thing is is scratched and stuff but i cant find one to buy, and im missing some of the mazda plates things, ill get the pics and put them on car domain next week.

The curly things are the wires that feed current to the rear window defroster strips, the tan lines on the hatch window. You'll see a little pad with solder on it on the glass itself near the top. That's where those tabs at the end of the curly things are supposed to be attached to the rear hatch glass...the update was a question about performance and what you found. Were the cats clogged? Did junk fall out of the rear tank lines when fuel was siphoned directly out? That kind of stuff...

vaccum leak? Also my mechanic put an extra fuel filter just before the carb. It looks cool and you can see if your gas is clean and being pumped at a reasanable rate. Check your distributer also.

check the volumetric fuel pump flow rate, low fuel flow can be from line blockage, or a fuel pump on its last days. Also you can see if there is debris in the fuel. Haynes/Clinton's have good instructions.
Good luck
70 replies, and not one about flow rate?

if you want to know if its your fuel pump just pop the 2 lines that run into your carb. and put them in a small like sand bucket. turn the engine to just were all the lights come on, not starting it but right before, just sit there like that, you will see flowage in the bucket if your pump is working, and barely any gas will come out if its your pump or lines.
the exhaust is easy stuff to drop man, alot better than buying a new fuelpump when you dont need it. a few bolts and your done.

i got the car running ok, now im faced with a difficult decision, i want to get it painted (grey or black) during the winter while i drive my 68 falcon. but i want to make sure it runs ok in the winter cause the guy i got it from said it didnt. the real difficult thing is that i want to redo the interior in black and it is currently red(or whatever color that is). the interior isnt that bad i just need new window channels, some panels, dash cover, struts, door handle cups, and a few other things. how much would it cost to redo the whole thing in black compared to redoing the red

There have been a couple interesting threads on the interior recently.
