Acceptible offset?

Hi guys, what's an acceptible offset range for a "stock" SA suspension? I have a cunning plan to drop in 4x108 hubs so that I may use the plentiful VW/Ford wheels... However, offest seems to be between +40 and +50mm. Standard offset for the SA is +20mm... That would be between 2 and 4 centimeters of meat where meat ought not have been; does anyone have any intel here?

Thanks.

Forget about offset. Once the rim width changes so does the offset. !st gens will handle 4-41/2" in the front, up to 5" in the back.

Fwiw, the first wheels on the SA were 5" wide steel wheels. All the FB wheels were 5-1/2" wide. That may explain the offset difference..

The Ford Focus uses the 4x108, with about a 45mm offset on a 15x6 wheel. It is horrible to buy wheels for that thing (I speak from experience).

true SA is 20mm (ok ok its 18mm) which is different from most newer cars.

these days there are actually a decent amount of 4x110 wheels around, rota makes the RB, which looks great...

OK-- So... Backspacing must be equal to or greater than the OEM wheels; yes?

minimum backspace is 4.5, 5.0 max but it will barely clear the frame and it could be an issue on turns. I use 4.75 with no issues

No. Sort of. As Mel pointed out it can be greater, to a point. It can also be lesser, to a point, depending on wheel width/diameter, lowering, tire profile/width, yada yada yada.

WackyRicer, with this 4.75" of backspace how wide of a wheel can you fit under the stock fenders before rubbing on the outside??????
How wide to get the wheel absolutely flush with the fender edge????
Disregard tire size for now, would a 8" wide wheel with 4.75" backspace fit under rolled fenders without sticking out?????

^^^ Im just wondering the same thing..
Ive just installed some zg flares so i can hopefully fit 8" wide tyres in the front but woried that the offset will cause damage to the front bearings etc.

so if i can find a 8" tyre with 4.75" of backspace i will be allright???
