Acceleration!

I drive a 1980 RX-7 GS:

Ok, so i'm finished selling my dad's motorcycle to some guy, and my brother calls and says, "where the hell are you, the movie is starting in ten minutes!" So i've got ten minutes to make a 25 minute drive to see Napoleon Dynamite. Hop in the RX and fire it up cold, choke on. Five minutes later, i'm flying down the road behind some 200X model Camry V6 that seems to be in the same situation i'm in, cause he's flying too. No traffic to slow us down, but he's getting away on the straights like a motherb at like 70-80 mph. I know the car isn't performing at its best cold, but I do notice that there is a SERIOUS WOT fuel problem.

The car seems like it's just not getting enough fuel. When I floor it for like ten seconds, the car will accelerate fine and smooth to about 60-70 mph but after a few seconds, usually ten or fifteen, it will act like I let off the throttle altogether even though the pedal is to the floor. No bad noises, it just jerks on and off until I let off the gas a little bit, to about 1/3 throttle, then it will be nice again. If I drive it at 1/3 throttle for a minute or so, I can floor it again for another 10 or 15 seconds before the same **** happens. The car will lose acceleration on long uphills as well. This stuff only happens when I drive the car hard, it never has a problem going around town or when i'm taking it easy.

The problem seems to be the fuel pump, since from what i've read, they aren't reliable. Everything else on the engine seems to be working fine. The fuel filter is new. The problem happens at a full tank of gas as well as when it runs on fumes.

My question:
Do you think it's the fuel pump?
How can I test it?
If it is faulty, what is a good replacement for less than $150?

Thanks!

I have same problem. I would suggest buying a new filter and if that doesnt do it then replace pump. My filter is brand new (15 miles) and my car does exactly what you are describing.

I know you said that you changed the filter, but try it again. I used to have to change the filter often until I got in the habit of keeping the tank at least half full at all time.

I had a problem similar to that.
I put in some HEET (I thought it might have been bad gas)...the next day I drove her real hard for about 5 minutes on the street (stop and go).
A couple puffs of black smoke blew out the back when I had it at around 7000 RPM in 1st and after that it was like everything was cleaned out.
Throttle response completely returned.
I'm not sure if it was the cat or the fuel or carbon build up or what...but haven't had that problem since.
That was like 6 months ago.

ok when it does it does it make a soung like you have no fuel or oil in the engine (anotherwords does the engine get louder) if it does then you do'nt have enough fuel pressure going to it and the bowls are running out. But.... if it does the same thing at 70 and you let ALL THE WAY OFF and then get back on WOT and it does it again then you are getting to much fuel you are flooding it. If thats it then just lean it out with the air/fuel ratio screw.

with mine, I could hold it at 45 mph and go WOT after running first gear real hard. When I go WOT it does not accelerate. Just stays there and then a few seconds (maybe 10) I can go WOT and it will accelerate again. Doesnt matter which gear just has absolutley no power whatsoever.

On the other hand, if I take it easy and shift at say 4000ish every gear I can easily get up to speeds of 70-75 with no hesitation OR loss of power.

It just seems to me that my fuel pump is taking a crap and wont keep the bowls full if I really get on it (and I want to really get on it).

What is a good chemical to clean out gas tank? Where can I find this chemical? Cost?
