Then it got real noisy.

I got all the components (wire, silicone plug & coil boots, and metal terminals) at Knecht's, a local auto parts store. The wire was made by Packard, and has an 8mm black jacket. I think it's intended for use on tractors. I soldered the ends on rather than crimping them, to avoid that possible source of corrosion. I will add that I had a radio in the car at the time, and the reception was fine until you off-tuned the frequency even slightly.

Good god, it's been 20 years since that was covered in tech school.
Refresh my memory and maybe I'll agree with you.
Also, remember the Racing Bleat "Red-hot" wires that were essentially a solid-conductor wire with a resistor soldered on the end for EMI suppression?

But it has to do with induction in a wire from a magnetic filed, and as I recall, the spiral wounds dont eminate like solids cause they act to absorb the magnetic field so it doesnt eminate out into the surroundings.Yes, the ULTRA wires? Whats the point? other than longer life?

I really hope that is not a serious statement.BTW, the resistors used could have been spiral wound themselves. Usually the high wattage resistors that come in those ceramic block packages (like the ballast resistor in the FC coil pack) are spiral wound.

Resistance does suppress EMI, but its not the only way to skin the cat. If you provide a closed path for the magnetic and/or electric fields, you can use reactance ('imaginary' resistance caused by inductance and capacitance) instead of resistance for suppression. Ultimately, reactance is a better method, but more complex and difficult to implement, because the energy is temporaraly stored rather than wasted by resistance, or lost by sending it off as EMI.
