AC Questions

Which valve is the correct one to charge the AC system with? One is marked S and the other is marked D on the compressor, which one is the low pressure side? How can I tell if my compressor clutch is bad? We put a belt on, and it ran ok, but we put 12volts to the clutch and it wouldnt engage. System is empty of refridgerant. We did my brothers jetta with the 134 conversion kit and it works great, now I want ac.

Thanks, Matt

If you applied 12V directly to the compressor line and the clutch didnt engage, then the clutch is most likely bad.

BTW: If the clutch does run, ONLY do it for a second at most. Its hard on the compressor when there no oil or refrigerant in the system

Thanks for the info, it seems like the clutch, maby a bearing too. The part the belt connects to on the compressor wobbles and when I tighten the belt, it looks like it is bent, is that related to the clutch? Also, how hard and how much $ to replace a compressor clutch?

I also understand the AC will not engage without refrigerant in it...I just did the R-12 to R134 conversion with a kit and they want you to load up two bottles of R134 first, then oil, then top it off because the system has some kind of shut off sensor when it is empty...

Since 134 is so cheap, you might want to try that first then see if the compressor / etc needs to be replaced...

Good luck...
